The City of South San Francisco – Government

The City of South San Francisco – Government Welcome to the official City of South San Francisco page. South San Francisco has mild winters and dry cool summers.
(201)

South San Francisco occupies the basin and portions of the sides of a broad valley formed by the San Bruno Mountains on the north and the Coast Range on the west. Most of the valley faces adjacent San Francisco Bay, affording sweeping vistas, from higher levels and a definite sense of identification with the Bay. The hills to the west shield the city from much of the fog that prevails in neighbori

ng areas. Population has tripled since World War II with the opening of such subdivisions as Buri Buri, Winston Manor and Westborough on the slopes west of El Camino. It has grown from 4,411 in 1920 to 61,824 in 2006. A new BART station opened in June 2003. South San Francisco offers its citizens a city in which to live comfortably in fine residential areas; a place of recreation in parks, swimming pools, and marina; a place to work in more than 3,200 firms and businesses including many biotech companies such as Genentech which gives the city the title of "Birthplace of Biotechnology."

They’re back, and creating quite the buzz! We’ve been alerted to a new active swarm of bees on the 300 block of Grand Avenue. The swarm will likely dissipate on its own over time, but please bee cautious and give the area plenty of space.

The South San Francisco Fire Department has deployed two engines and seven personnel to Washington State as part of two San Mateo County strike teams supporting wildfire response efforts in the Spokane area.

The crews will assist communities experiencing significant structure loss and large-scale evacuations. Each team is expected to remain assigned to the incident for approximately two weeks. We thank Captain Jeremiah Seipel, Captain Devin Finn, Fire Apparatus Operators Shaun Hansen and Ryan Biberston, and Paramedic Firefighters Brent Dubois, Jesus Esquivel, and Kaehlan Walsh for answering the call to help. We wish both strike teams a productive deployment and look forward to their safe return!

Come join us for the next installment from our popular “What’s Happening East of 101” Biotech Speaker Series - THIS Friday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. to learn about one of our neighbors, ThermoFisher.

This speaker series is designed to offer residents an exclusive glimpse into the dynamic world of biotechnology and life sciences. Recognizing the limited interaction between residents on the west side of Highway 101 and the individuals and companies operating on the east side, this series seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the impactful work happening just beyond our doorstep. What started as a goal to fill a critical gap for local families has grown into one of South San Francisco's biggest community success stories.

Thanks to the generosity of residents, businesses, and community partners, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1507’s Diaper Drive collected more than 70,800 diapers at this year’s Touch-A-Truck event hosted by the South San Francisco Fire Department. The overwhelming support came as more than 800 residents attended the event, more than doubling last year's attendance of 300 people and surpassing last year’s total of approximately 8,500 diapers.
