Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District The Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District is a small rural fire district located NE of Springfield.

The district is 21 miles long and responds to about 450 calls a year. The calls for service are handled by 4 paid staff and about 28 volunteers

Celebrating a Major Milestone at Mohawk Valley RFD!

In 2024, thanks to the passing of our community staffing levy, MVRFD successfully transitioned to 24/7 emergency coverage. As part of that milestone, we launched our Resident Student Program—an initiative where student firefighters work a 48/96 shift schedule alongside our full-time crew while receiving $10,000 per year toward their college tuition.

Today, we are thrilled to celebrate the very first student to graduate from this program: Alex Bradford!

Alex joined MVRFD as a student on November 1, 2024, while attending Lane Community College to earn his Associate Degree in Paramedicine. This past Monday, Alex officially received his Oregon Paramedic License and has accepted a full-time position with Lane Fire Authority!

Here is a look at what Alex accomplished during his time in our boots:

580+ emergency calls for service answered

5,800+ hours of on-duty shift response provided to our community

231 hours of fire training completed

1,400+ hours dedicated to paramedic coursework, clinical rotations, and field internships

Certifications Earned: NFPA Firefighter I, Wildland Firefighter Type 2, and NFPA Apparatus Operator (with his Fire Instructor certification coming in the next few weeks!)

If the district had paid minimum wage for the shift and call hours Alex provided, it would have cost our taxpayers roughly $98,000. Instead, this program provided Alex with tuition support and hands-on, real-world experience to jumpstart his career, all while saving our district thousands of dollars.

Alex’s last official day in the student program will be September 18th. While we are sad to see him step out of his student role, we are incredibly proud of his success. Best of all, Alex plans to stay on as a volunteer firefighter with Mohawk Valley RFD to continue serving the community that supported him!

This program was built to set the next generation up for lifelong success, and Alex has set the gold standard.

Mohawk Fire assisted our neighbors today with a Brush Fire threatening a structure. MVRFD provided a Type 6 engine and a Chief Officer. This is a prime example of the importance of these relationships.

Deployment Update:

Yesterday around 1 pm Lane County Taskforce 9 returned home after 15 Days of hard work protecting lives and property at multiple fires across eastern Oregon. This included the return of Chief Wallace, Captain Wallace, and Firefighter Williams.

Less then 24 hours later Taskforce 42 deployed from Lane County lead by Assistant Chief Wallace to help protect lives in property in the area of the Second Flat Fire. Fires do not recognize boundaries and neither do the dedicated first responders that deploy to serve.

Taskforce 42 includes apparatus and personnel from Eugene Springfield Fire, McKenzie Fire, Coburg Fire, Upper McKenzie Fire, Junction City Fire, and Lane Fire Authority. We wish wish them a safe deployment.

All these agencies are still staffed and serving their communities while assisting across the state.

Hell’s Hill Update

Yesterday, July 22nd, a lightning strike started a fire near Hell’s Hill on BLM land between Upper Camp Creek and Marcola.

Due to an aggressive initial attack by ODF crews, forward progress was quickly stopped. MVRFD provided a water tender and command vehicle to assist with operations.

Overnight, ODF was able to get the fire trailed and lined with hose. It is now mapped at 9 acres. Crews will continue working today with more resources on the way. ODF will be monitoring lightning strikes from yesterday’s storm.

While this incident was outside of MVF’s District, we work closely with ODF and other Lane County Agencies through mutual aid to help keep fires as small as possible.

FIRE DANGER LEVEL INCREASED TO HIGH

Effective 12:01 AM on Friday, July 17, the fire danger level in our area has increased to High (Yellow).

As temperatures continue to rise and fuels become drier, the risk of wildfires increases significantly. We ask everyone to use extra caution while working or recreating outdoors and to help prevent human caused fires.

Please review the attached fire restrictions, which are now in effect. These restrictions are in place to reduce the risk of wildfire and help protect our community, firefighters and natural resources.

Every small action makes a difference. By following these restrictions and staying aware, we can all help keep Mohawk Valley and our surrounding communities safe.
