♻️ From waste to fertilizer: here’s how it happens!

▶️Solids from the wastewater treatment process are sent to our Biosolids Management Facility between Eugene and Junction City.
▶️Lagoons stabilize the material and reduce pathogens.
▶️The biosolids are dried using mechanical de-watering and air-drying processes and prepared for reuse.
▶️Nutrient-rich biosolids are recovered as fertilizer and applied on our poplar tree farm. 🌱

📣Calling all 5TH GRADE TEACHERS: Save the Date for Clean Water University this fall!

We're offering our Clean Water University field trip this October to all 5th (or 4th/5th) grade classes in the Springfield, Eugene 4J, and Bethel school districts, and will fill slots using a lottery system at the beginning of the school year.

Clean Water University includes a tour of the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC)’s wastewater treatment plant in Eugene, as well as hands-on STEM activities, learning about wastewater, stormwater, and drinking water. It is FREE for teachers to attend!

This program is delivered jointly by the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission, the City of Springfield, and the City of Eugene, with support from Springfield Utility Board, EWEB, and other local agencies who work to protect our water resources. 💧

What's ? Civil engineer Nick Thrasher shares his, working with the MWMC as an employee of the City of Springfield. Nick manages major infrastructure projects such as the aeration system upgrades work that is currently underway.

"If I am doing my part correctly on my projects, I am firstly impacting the operators that control the treatment processes," says Nick, "which makes their job easier by providing them with better equipment. This helps them effectively treat the wastewater, ultimately benefitting the Willamette River."

Only flush the three P's: p*e, p**p, and (toilet) paper! 🚽

Here in the pretreatment area of our regional wastewater treatment plant, large mechanical bar screens are used to "rake" the incoming wastewater and remove any large trash before it continues on to be cleaned.

Wipes, paper towels, food wrappers, dental floss, and many other items that should have been thrown in the trash are often removed at this stage and can create clogs or jams. You can help us keep our system trash-free, by only flushing the three P's!

Wondering what's happening at the MWMC regional wastewater treatment plant?

This year, we began construction on our aeration system upgrades project. In this video, Senior Civil Engineer Mark Van Eeckhout walks us through some key details and explains why this work is so important for keeping our wastewater infrastructure operating efficiently and safely for years to come.

Capital improvement projects are carefully planned and prioritized by the MWMC, a regional partnership between the City of Springfield, City of Eugene, and Lane County. Investments like this help ensure the treatment plant can continue protecting public health, downstream drinking water sources, and habitat for aquatic wildlife well into the future.
