Second graders at Hagemann Elementary School began the year learning about words with short vowel sounds. This week, they shifted their focus to words with long vowel sounds.

On Tuesday, students began their lesson by viewing a sentence containing grammatical mistakes. They identified the mistakes and correctly rewrote the sentence. Then, they discussed the difference between short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds.

Students reviewed how adding the “magic -e” to the end of words alters the sound made by the first vowel in the word. First, they wrote words like rod and slid. Then, they added -e to the end of the words, creating the long vowel sound found in rode and slide.

Second graders finished the lesson by playing the Magic E in a Row Game. Students were given a word containing the long vowel sound, like “snake,” and identified words on the board that rhymed with that word, like bake, shake and make.

When Emina Muratovic graduated from Oakville High School in 2019, she already had 30 college credits because of the dual enrollment classes and Advanced Placement classes she took at OHS. She planned to study medicine, and choosing rigorous high school classes helped her get ahead.

But just a few days into her undergraduate career, Muratovic realized she didn’t have a passion for medicine and transitioned to study marketing and sports business. She continued her education at the University of South Florida, earning a Master in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Sports and Entertainment Management.

She immediately started networking and getting involved while she was attending her masters programs. Muratovic worked with the USF football team, the Bradenton Marauders (a Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) and the Tampa Bay Lightning. During the final year of her program she was an Insights and Strategy Fellow for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

She then transitioned to a similar role with the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium. She now works as a Marketing Analyst, assisting the Dolphins, the Miami Open tennis tournament and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix with all aspects of their digital product, like social media, paid advertising, trend watching and the marketing budget.

While she didn’t end up using a lot of the information she learned in science classes she took at OHS, Muratovic says having a rigorous class schedule in high school taught her how to work hard. She also says she learned that it’s okay to pivot and make changes.

Her advice for high school students is to begin networking and making meaningful connections in their area of interest as soon as possible.

Elliott Parai, a Mehlville High School student, was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Only around 16,000 high school seniors from across the country receive this honor. Elliott is now qualified to advance to the next round of the competition.

Another MHS student, Katelyn Pham, was named a National Merit Commended Student. This recognition is only received by 34,000 students across the country each year.

These honors place Elliott and Katelyn among the top scorers in the country on the PSAT exam. Congratulations! 💙

The Oakville High School softball team had the opportunity to play on their new, turfed field for the first time on Monday, taking on Kirkwood High School. Here are some photos of the Tigers in action! 💙🥎

The work on the OHS baseball/softball field was recommended by the Facilities Steering Committee, a group of parents, staff members and community members who met throughout last school year, touring schools and prioritizing a list of projects to be completed.

In addition to making the playing field safer for the Tigers and visiting student-athletes, larger dugouts were added to accommodate the growing baseball and softball programs and a new shed to store equipment was constructed. The field beyond the outfield fence, which is used by many OHS teams, was also turfed to improve student-athlete safety.

Third-grade students at MOSAIC Elementary School have been learning about different ways to collect and display data. They collected responses from their classmates answering the question: What type of character would you choose to be in a book: a hero, villain, sidekick or mentor? After collecting and analyzing the data, they created a pictograph to display their results. Good work, mathematicians! 💙

Fifth-grade students at Bierbaum Elementary School are learning to use evidence to find the author’s point of view.

They began their lesson on Friday by playing the emotion guessing game. A student acted out an emotion, and the rest of the group had to determine what emotion they were showing.

Afterward, students read a description of how characters were feeling in a given scenario. They brainstormed different ways an author could describe that emotion without directly stating it, such as by describing the character’s body language.

At its September meeting, the Mehlville Board of Education recognized students from Rogers Elementary School and Bernard Middle School. The board also honored its outgoing students advisers. Congratulations to these students! 💙

The Mehlville National Education Association recognized Leah Byrd, a Rogers student, and Aaron Adams, a Bernard student, as its Students of the Month for September. Leah shows the qualities of an outstanding and motivated student, has positive relationships with peers and is a dedicated worker who puts forth her best effort. Aaron was recognized for his hard work, character and strong self-advocacy for his learning.

The Rogers Girls on the Run team was also recognized. The program encourages physical activity, helps participants build self confidence and healthy relationships. They train for and run a 5K and complete a community service project. Current and former team members in attendance included Amya Kumawat, Brooklyn Newsome, Abigail Robison, Nora Newsome and Leah Byrd.

Bernard recognized its students who had the highest academic growth in English language arts and math during the 2025-2026 school year. Congratulations to Ayla Rekic, Grace Kreienheder, Zoe Hettich, Elena Binns, Colten Crepps, Eldar Beglerovic, Noah Secic and Reese Sallin.

Elia Krausz, a Mehlville High School student, and Ajla Ramic, an Oakville High School student, were recognized for their service to the board as student advisers for the past year.

The Mehlville Board of Education was also presented with the Governance Team Award from the Missouri School Boards’ Association. This award recognizes school boards and their superintendents for outstanding commitment to professional development, effective government practices and public-school advocacy.
