Thank you to everyone who joined the St. Louis Housing Authority at Sunday’s Out of the Darkness Community Walk. 💙

Our staff, residents and community partners came together to honor loved ones, support su***de prevention and remind one another that no one has to face difficult moments alone.

We were proud to share mental health awareness artwork created by youth in our Summer S.E.E.D.S. Academy in partnership with City Faces and artist and educator Bob Hansman. Their work brought a powerful message of hope to the day.

Carr Square Village has a place in St. Louis history. Built in 1942 on the Near North Side, it was a low-rise public housing development serving families, many of whom relocated from the rural South.

Decades later, Carr Square Village became one of the first public housing communities to move to tenant management, giving residents a greater role in shaping their community.

Clinton-Peabody residents recently came together for a community meeting focused on resources, redevelopment updates and the future of public education in St. Louis.

Preservation of Affordable Housing Community Impact Manager Bryce Gibson led the meeting and shared updates on the upcoming Clinton-Peabody development and resources available through the St. Louis Housing Authority.

The SLHA Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Program was also onsite, connecting residents with utility assistance and other supportive resources.

Education was a major part of the conversation. Saint Louis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Myra M. Berry answered questions from residents about the future of the school district and how upcoming decisions may directly affect families in the Clinton-Peabody community.

Peabody Elementary School Principal Dr. Shontrice Garrett also joined the meeting to address residents’ questions and discuss the school’s role in supporting students and families.

Also in attendance were AFT St. Louis, Local 420, Aflcio First Vice President Steven Hill, Retiree Chapter Chair Byron Clemens, Prosperity Connection Director of Coaching Robert Nelson V, who shared information about free financial education and coaching; and representatives from Employment Connection Saint Louis.

The Elevated Wealth Academy is an eight-week financial education program designed to empower participants with the knowledge and confidence needed to build a strong financial foundation and work toward long-term financial success.

This opportunity is available to participants in SLHA’s Bridge to Homeownership and Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) programs.

This summer, SLHA’s LaSalle Park Summer Hub (The Hub) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) helped make the summer months meaningful for local youth.

Held weekly, The Hub gave young residents opportunities to learn, explore, build meaningful relationships and enjoy educational, recreational and enrichment activities with their neighbors.

“The kids enjoy when we come, and they always say they wish we could be there every day during the summer,” Hub lead and ROSS Service Coordinator Camille Shoals Shoals shared.

And while The Hub kept youth learning and engaged each week, ROSS Service Coordinator Justin Mosely led SLHA’s SFSP, providing daily nutritious meals and snacks to LaSalle Park youth while school was out.

We are grateful to the community partners who shared their time, talents and resources to help make these experiences possible, including CAM STL, St. Louis Public Library, Healthy Hair 2Day Foundation, Mobile Y, Ready Readers, Community Development Institute Head Start, BJC School Outreach and Youth Development, the Pediatric Injury Prevention Program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Together, our staff, families and community partners helped create a summer filled with learning, exploration, connection and fun!
