Middleton and Star Fire Districts will be holding live fire training June 10th-14th on W Joplin Road in Star.
Providing live fire training in an actual structure (acquired structure training) is one of the most valuable and realistic experiences firefighters can receive. The goals and objectives focus on safety, realism, skill development, and decision-making under true fireground conditions.
Below are the main Goals and Objectives:
Primary Goals of Live Fire Training in an Actual Home
1. Improve Firefighter Safety and Survival
Teach firefighters to recognize hazardous building conditions.
Improve ability to read smoke, heat, fire conditions, and structural integrity.
Reinforce air management, PPE use, and maintaining situational awareness.
Practice emergency procedures—lost/trapped firefighter, MAYDAY, rapid egress.
2. Provide Realistic Fireground Experience
Experience real heat, flame behavior, visibility loss, and fire dynamics.
Understand how real materials ignite, burn, and fail (flow paths, flashover potential).
Build confidence operating in high-stress, low-visibility environments.
3. Develop Effective Fire Attack and Extinguishment Skills
Practice coordinated fire attack, hose advancement, and water application.
Reinforce nozzle discipline, stream placement, and cooling techniques.
Experience how ventilation affects fire behavior and interior conditions.
4. Strengthen Search, Rescue, and Primary Tactical Operations
Execute primary and secondary searches in realistic layouts.
Practice victim removal in true residential obstacles and furnishings.
Train on realistic stretches, ladders, forcible entry, and initial tactical priorities.
5. Improve Company-Level Communication and Coordination
Strengthen communication between interior crews, command, and support companies.
Master radio discipline, crew integrity, and accountability.
Practice coordinated tactics (attack, ventilation, search, RIC).
6. Enhance Incident Command Decision-Making
Provide ICs with realistic tactical problems and evolving fire conditions.
Practice size-ups, risk assessments, and strategic deployment of resources.
Reinforce command presence, operational tempo, and supervisory skill.
7. Reinforce Risk–Benefit Mindset and Tactical Reasoning
Teach when to operate offensively vs. defensively based on conditions.
Develop understanding of survivability profiling.
Build the ability to make dynamic decisions under real stress.
8. Allow Evaluation of Skills, Gaps, and Operational Readiness
Provide instructors with a true benchmark of firefighter and company performance.
Identify skill gaps and areas needing additional training.
Strengthen overall operational readiness for real-world incidents.
Why Live Fire in Actual Structures Is So Valuable
Real floor plans—not burn building boxes.
