Stony Brook Fire Department Stony Brook Fire Rescue We strongly believe in fire prevention and education as valuable tools.

The Stony Brook Fire Department protects the historic community of Stony Brook, which is located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Our duty and goals are to provide the highest level of fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents of the Stony Brook Fire District. The entire membership of the Stony Brook Fire Department are volunteers, and we are dedicated to protect

the lives, property, and businesses within our boundaries. These programs assist us in preventing fires and injuries to our residents, who have entrusted their personal safety and homes to us. Last night, members of the Stony Brook Fire Department trained at the Suffolk County Fire Academy alongside Setauket Fire Department, one of our neighboring departments and mutual aid partner.

With 30+ members in attendance, the drill focused on sharpening skills, strengthening teamwork, and preparing for the emergencies we face in our community.

Thank you to everyone who put in the work and continues to serve with dedication.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ We pause to remember the brave members of the Stony Brook Fire Department who answered two distinct calls to duty. They didn't just gear up to protect our neighborhoods at home; they also stepped into military uniform to defend our freedoms abroad.
These individuals lived lives defined by raw courage and unwavering dedication. Though they are no longer with us, their selflessness lives on. We are forever grateful for every uniform they wore. Your watch is over, brothers and sisters, but we will never forget. πŸš’

Back in the day, a spring water rescue meant our crews braved frigid temperatures in heavy, waterlogged turnout gear. Today, SBFD marine rescue crews hit the water in state-of-the-art dry suits.
For National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22), the NSBC and USCG want to remind you that our local water temperatures are still hovering in the lower 50s. A sudden plunge steals body heat 25 times faster than air, causing instant panic. Dress for the water temperature, not the air, and wear that life jacket! πŸ¦ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

We are teaming up with the NSBC and USCG for National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22) to highlight water safety. When things go wrong on our inland waterways, our rescue teams rely on a specific tool to pull victims to safety without putting a firefighter in danger.
Clue 1 (Hard): It utilizes a dynamic, floating rope. πŸͺ’
Clue 2 (Medium): It allows us to pull a conscious victim to shore from up to 75 feet away.
Clue 3 (Easy): It is literally a brightly colored sack stuffed with rope that we toss directly to you. 🎯

When the fog rolls into the Sound, the horizon completely vanishes. 🌫️
Operating a vessel in marine fog takes intense focus. That’s why the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) are partnering for National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22)β€”to crack down on hazards like Boating Under the Influence (BUI). Alcohol destroys your spatial awareness exactly when you need it most. βš“
The NWS just extended marine forecasts to 60 nautical miles offshore for better warnings! Stay sober at the helm and let’s keep our training a precaution, not a necessity. πŸš€πŸ’¦

Before you fire up the engine and head out onto the Sound, you check your gear. Life jackets secured? Fire extinguishers serviced? VHF radio working? πŸ“Ÿβš“
For National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22), the NSBC and USCG remind us that pre-launch checks save lives. But when emergency comms light up, who answers the call? We do. And we need you. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸš’
Do you have what it takes? SBFD is looking for new volunteers. We provide 100% free training, tuition assistance, and a lifelong brotherhood and sisterhood. You bring the grit; we supply the gear.
Protect your community.

Different backgrounds. Different paths. One mission.

Career and volunteer EMS providers work side by side every day to deliver lifesaving care to our community.

During EMS Week, we thank every EMT, paramedic, dispatcher, and support member who helps make that mission possible.

We appreciate you today and every day. πŸš‘

🚁πŸ”₯ Earlier this evening, Stony Brook FD had the incredible opportunity to host a Blackhawk helicopter familiarization and demonstration in collaboration with the New York Army National Guard (3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Helicopter Regiment). πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
We were proud to be joined by our neighbors from Setauket FD, Stony Brook Fire Brigade, and Port Jefferson FD, with approximately 125 members participating in this high-level training. 🀝
Key Training Highlights:
βœ… Crew Extrication: Hands-on techniques for rescuing personnel from military aircraft.
βœ… Aircraft Familiarization: Essential safety protocols for operating around aviation assets.
βœ… Enhanced Readiness: Strengthening our response capabilities for military and aviation-related emergencies.
A massive thank you to the New York Army National Guard for their time and expertise. We also want to recognize Former Chief Scott Roberts and 1st Asst. Chief Paul McNeil for their hard work in coordinating this outstanding event. πŸ‘
Strong partnerships and constant training keep our members sharp and our community safe! πŸš’πŸ’ͺ

🚁 Training Announcement – May 13
The Stony Brook Fire Department will be conducting a joint training exercise with the New York Army National Guard tonight at approximately 6:00 PM.
The training will involve the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Helicopter Regiment, which operates UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, as part of ongoing coordination and emergency response preparedness.
Residents in the area may notice helicopter activity and increased noise for a short period of time during the exercise.
This training helps strengthen cooperation between local emergency services and military aviation units that may assist during large-scale emergencies or disasters.
We appreciate the community’s support as we continue working to keep Stony Brook safe. πŸš’πŸš
