During the month of June, 5th grade students will engage in SEL writing prompts and short read-alouds that celebrate Pride Month and the diversity of families, identities, and experiences in our community. Through reflection, discussion, and literature, students will explore themes of self-awareness, empathy, respect, inclusion, and belonging!

Today on Day X, students explored xylophones and bells while showing they are Principled by following directions and stopping when asked, Communicators by taking turns and making music together respectfully, and Inquirers by comparing how the instruments work. We noticed the xylophone is struck with mallets while the bells are rung by shaking or pressing.

Yesterday, Roberts’ 8th grade celebrated Civics Day. We started the event with Stephanie Pasquale from the Mayor’s office giving a speech about the importance of their work. We had the social studies department engage with students, along with parents, teachers, and classes. Thank you to everyone who showed up to engage in this participatory action project. Students were able to get data when guests took surveys, signed petitions, and engaged in good conversations about field trip equity, consequences for bullying, and providing more funding for mental health supports like therapists in schools.

Roberts Pre-K-8 School 5th graders recently hosted a Deaf Awareness Around the World Showcase – a collaborative project they’ve been working on all year in their ASL & ELA classes – in celebration of Deaf Awareness Week!

The students read the book ‘Show Me A Sign’ and then researched and wrote about sign language and related topics. As staff and families browsed through the school cafeteria this spring, the 5th graders presented to them about assistive technology for the deaf, communication methods for deaf people, deaf culture, how and when American Sign Language (ASL) was established, and more.

“We learned about the skills deaf people have had to develop so they can communicate with hearing people,” 5th grader Deshon Hines shared. “Now we have some ASL skills, too, so we can communicate with people in our school or community who may be deaf!”

🌟 Teacher Spotlight at J.T. Roberts Pre-K-8 School🌟
Today we’re celebrating one of our amazing educators who brings energy, dedication, and positivity into our school every single day!
Teacher: Sarah Gilbert
What are is/are your alma mater(s)?
I am a graduate of the Sackets Harbor Central School district. I was 1 of 30 students in our class. I attended Jefferson Community College and then went on to Geneseo where I got a degree in Elementary Ed and Special Ed.

What led you to go into teaching?
I was inspired to teach by my parents. I also taught ballet as a teenager and loved it and so I thought I’d like to teach in a school one day.

What is your superpower as a teacher ?
Intentionally incorporating the power of play into our learning centers!

What is 1 thing that students would say about you?
I hope they feel supported and encouraged, so they feel confident, capable, and valued. But it is Pre-K so I bet they might say I love their hugs and beautiful artwork!

What motivates you?
I love seeing joy in the faces of our Pre-k students!

What's the most important thing students learn from you that isn't in the curriculum?
Manners are important and being kind matters.

I have had the privilege of being part of the Roberts community for 20 years—both as a parent and as an educator. I genuinely look forward to coming to Roberts, knowing that I am part of something meaningful and impactful.
Working alongside Ms. Mo has been a true gift. We operate as a strong, unified team, grounded in mutual respect, open communication, and a shared commitment to being our very best for our students. Together, we strive to create a positive and supportive environment where every child can thrive.

J.T. Roberts Elementary-Middle School is brighter because of the positivity, connection, and passion she brings into the building each day. 💛📚✨

SCSD students are gaining STEM knowledge and a love of reading – thanks to the United Way of Central New York's Full STEAM Ahead program!

Last year, the program provided age-appropriate STEM-themed books to students at STEAM at Dr. King Elementary School each month. This year, the program has expanded to 4 SCSD schools – providing more than 1,200 students at Dr. King, Dr. Weeks Elementary School, McKinley-Brighton Elementary, and Roberts Pre-K-8 School with a new book (and corresponding family tip sheets to engage with the book content as a family) every month during the school year. to the United Way for this generous support.
