MDC - Metropolitan Development Council

MDC - Metropolitan Development Council We have helped Pierce County with housing, health care, education, and employment since 1964. http:/

We help create vibrant communities by improving the lives of Pierce County's residents every day through our work in housing, health care, education, and employment. MDC is a vital community resource for Tacoma and Pierce County. Founded in 1964 as a non-profit Community Action Agency, MDC is committed to providing innovative programs that help remove people from a life of poverty and prepare them

for self-sufficient living. For most of our 48 year history, MDC has responded to community needs by providing services that address the needs of low-income families. We have introduced national model programs such as “Housing First,” “Healthcare for the Homeless,” “College Bound,” and the “Educational Opportunity Center,” which, in turn, have improved lives and given hope to thousands of residents. Known by many names, the legal name of MDC is "Metropolitan Development Council," but we are doing business as "Making a Difference in Community," because that's what we do.

💜 Overdose Awareness Month💜

Recovery looks different for everyone. At MDC, we’re here to support the whole person, wherever they are in their journey.

Support can mean:

🏠 Housing & stability
💡 Energy assistance
💼 Employment & education
🥫 Food & basic needs
💜 Behavioral health & recovery support
🕐 24/7 Withdrawal Management when you’re ready

Sometimes the first step toward recovery is simply having the support to take it. No judgment. No wrong door. Just help when you’re ready.

Recovery can start at any hour. 💜

During Overdose Awareness Month, we’re reminding our community that help doesn’t operate on a 9–5 schedule.

MDC’s Withdrawal Management Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for individuals ready to take that first step.

If you or someone you know needs support, our doors are open.

August is Overdose Awareness Month, a time to remember those we’ve lost, support those still struggling, and remind our community that recovery is possible. If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, you don’t have to wait for the “right” time to ask for help.

MDC’s Withdrawal Management Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing a safe and supportive place to begin the path toward recovery.

💜 Help is available 24/7.

💜 Compassionate withdrawal management and support.

💜 A first step toward stability, recovery, and what comes next.

Whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., our doors are open.

Help us spread the word: one conversation, one connection, and one decision to seek help can save a life.

💜 August is officially Overdose Awareness Month in Pierce County.💜

MDC is honored to be recognized as a community partner in the proclamation signed by Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello, Council Chair Jani Hitchen, and members of the Pierce County Council, recognizing the continued impact of overdose across our community and the importance of prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery.

This work is deeply connected to what we do every day at MDC. Our Withdrawal Management facility provides a safe, supportive place for individuals to begin their recovery journey, while our teams and community partners work to connect people with the care and resources they need to move forward.

As we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, we remember the lives lost, stand alongside individuals and families impacted by substance use, and celebrate the progress being made across Pierce County.

Every connection to care matters. Every step toward recovery matters. And recovery is possible. 💜
