This past weekend marked the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law that continues to shape a more accessible and inclusive world for people with disabilities.

At SportsAbility Alliance, we're proud to have spent decades working alongside organizations that share our commitment to inclusion, including our long-time partners at the Florida State Parks Foundation and Florida State Parks. Together, we've helped create opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the outdoors through accessible recreation and adaptive sports.

The ADA transformed what's possible, but our shared mission continues. Every new accessible trail, adaptive program, and inclusive recreational opportunity brings us one step closer to ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle.

We're grateful for our partners, volunteers, participants, and supporters who help make this vision a reality. Here's to celebrating the progress we've made over the past 36 yearsβ€”and continuing to build a future where recreation truly is for everyone.

β™ΏπŸŒΏ This Sunday marks 36 years since President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 β€” legislation designed to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as any other American.

This transformative civil rights law has made an impact on virtually every aspect of our society, including access to natural spaces and outdoor recreation.

Throughout , the Florida State Parks Foundation has proudly reflected on the progress made to expand accessible, inclusive experiences in our state parks while furthering our resolve to continue this crucial work far into the future. We won't stop until every park visitor can enjoy our state's iconic natural wonders.

Thank you to the incredible Florida State Parks, tremendous CSOs and Friends groups and generous community partners who have joined us on this mission. Most of all, thank you to everyone who has embarked on an accessible glass-bottom boat tour, breathed in the ocean air from a beach or floating wheelchair, laughed on an accessible playground, cast a fishing line from a boardwalk with lowered railings or enjoyed any of the accessible experiences found in our state parks.

🌿 Weekly Wellness: Adaptive Recreation Opens Doors

Adaptive recreation creates opportunities for people of all abilities to enjoy the physical, mental, and social benefits of an active lifestyle. By removing barriers and providing accessible equipment and programs, more people can discover activities they love and build confidence along the way.

πŸ’™ Have you ever participated in or volunteered at an adaptive recreation program? We'd love to hear about your experience!

β™ΏπŸŒΏ A core value. A deeply held belief. A key aspect of our mission.

The Florida State Parks Foundation has made a promise to prioritize accessibility in every project, experience and amenity we pursue. And we are so honored when these things make a real, positive impact for park visitors.

In 2024, the Foundation proudly received the SportsAbility Alliance Active Leisure for Life Award during a ceremony at Tallahassee State College.

For more than 35 years, the SportsAbility Alliance (formerly known as the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association) has promoted and provided accessible recreation experiences while informing the public about opportunities, events, spaces and programs that included persons with disabilities.

The Active Leisure for Life Award is given each year to an individual or organization that embodies the SportsAbility Alliance mission β€œto enrich lives through accessible, inclusive recreation and active leisure.”

The Foundation is honored to be among the many incredible recipients of the Active Leisure for Life Award, and we are committed to living up to these values for all time.
