🚨 Severe Weather Potential Overnight 🚨

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to move through our area tonight between midnight and 3:00 AM Tuesday morning, a time when many residents will be asleep. Potential hazards include damaging winds up to 70–85 mph, hail, heavy rainfall, and an isolated tornado threat.

Before going to bed tonight, make sure you have a reliable way to receive weather warnings while sleeping. Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people outdoors and may not wake you inside your home. Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, keep your phone charged, and consider using a NOAA Weather Radio or weather app with audible alerts.

Take a few minutes this evening to review your severe weather plan and identify the safest shelter location in your home.

Stay weather aware and be prepared to take immediate action if warnings are issued.

🚒 Training together makes all of us stronger.

Tonight, members of the Fairmount Township Fire Department brought their quint apparatus out to train alongside our crews. We appreciate the opportunity to cross-train, share knowledge, and continue building strong working relationships between departments.

Joint training like this helps ensure that when departments respond together on mutual aid incidents, operations run safely, efficiently, and seamlessly for the communities we serve.

A big thank you to Fairmount Township Fire Department for taking the time to work with our personnel and for their continued partnership.

Yesterday at approximately 4:49 PM, Stranger Township Fire Department responded for mutual aid to assist Kansas City Kansas Fire Department with a semi tractor-trailer fire near Interstate 70 and 87th Street.

The vehicle was located off the roadway down a wooded embankment, creating difficult access conditions for responding personnel and apparatus. Fire crews from multiple agencies worked together to contain and extinguish the fire while operating in challenging terrain.

During the incident, Stranger Township Fire Department provided water shuttle operations to support ongoing suppression efforts and maintain a continuous water supply for crews working at the scene.

While mutual aid is often associated with neighboring departments, emergency response partnerships regularly extend well beyond immediate borders. Departments throughout the region work together to provide additional staffing, apparatus, specialized resources, and operational support during significant incidents. This coordinated response demonstrates the importance of regional cooperation and interoperability between agencies to ensure communities receive the resources needed during emergencies.

Incidents involving large commercial vehicles in difficult terrain often require extensive coordination, manpower, and logistical support, particularly when access and water supply challenges are present.

Stranger Township Fire Department appreciates the professionalism, teamwork, and cooperation demonstrated by all responding agencies during the incident.

A big thank you to Leavenworth County Fire District No. 2 for coming out and training with us this morning on ladder truck operations. We appreciate the opportunity to work together, share knowledge, and strengthen our teamwork across departments.

Training like this helps all of us stay sharp, improve coordination, and better serve our communities when it matters most.

STFD incident response report for March 2026

🚫 BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🚫

A county-wide burn ban has been issued effective immediately.
NO burn permits will be issued until at least Monday.

🔥 Why this matters:
Extreme fire danger conditions are expected this weekend:
• Temperatures: Mid 80s to near 90°
• Humidity: As low as 15–25%
• Winds: 15–25 mph Saturday, increasing to 25–35 mph Sunday

These conditions make fires spread rapidly and become uncontrollable within seconds.

❗ This includes:
• Brush piles
• Trash burning
• Campfires
• Any open burning

🚒 We need your help:
Please do NOT burn anything during this time. Even a small fire can quickly turn into a large grass or field fire under these conditions.

💨 Winds will remain strong into the nighttime hours both days, so the danger does NOT go away after sunset.
