Halloween is here, and we wish you a spook-tacular day filled with plenty of sweet treats (no tricks) and frightfully good fun! 🍭🍬🍫

As ghosts, goblins, superheroes, and princesses take to the streets tonight, the Topeka Police Department wants to remind everyone to make safety a top priority. Whether you're behind the wheel or out trick-or-treating, a little extra caution can help keep Halloween fun and safe for everyone! 🎃

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS 🚗

👉 Stay alert! Watch carefully for trick-or-treaters and pedestrians, especially in neighborhoods.

👉 Slow down! Reduce your speed and scan the road frequently. A little extra caution can save lives.

👉 Expect the unexpected! Young children may dart into the street or cross between parked vehicles.

👉 Drive sober! Never get behind the wheel impaired. If you spot a suspected impaired driver, call 911.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PEDESTRIANS 🚶‍♀️

👉 Stick together! Trick-or-treat with a buddy or group, and make sure young children are accompanied by a responsible adult.

👉 Follow the rules of the road! Obey traffic signs, signals, and pedestrian crossing rules.

👉 Cross with caution! Use designated crosswalks or intersections, look both ways, and watch for turning vehicles before stepping into the street.

👻 Let's keep the scares in the costumes and decorations — not on our streets!

It's that time of year again! Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 a.m. Remember to turn your clocks BACK one hour Saturday night before heading to bed and enjoy that EXTRA hour of sleep! 😴⏰

🚔❄️ One hour back, one step ahead of winter! Use the time change as your reminder to inspect your vehicle and prepare for safer winter travels.

The Topeka Police Department reminds drivers that colder temperatures and winter weather are just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is ready for changing road conditions.

✅ Check your tires for proper inflation, tread depth and traction.

✅ Test your battery to make sure it can handle freezing temperatures.

✅ Inspect your lights and windshield wipers to ensure they're working properly.

✅ Check and top off fluids, including oil, antifreeze and windshield washer fluid.

✅ Inspect belts and hoses for signs of wear, cracks or damage.

A little preparation today can make a BIG difference in keeping you and your passengers safe on the road this winter!

💙 👮‍♂️ Honoring a Legacy of TPD Service: Thank You Lieutenant Ron Ekis 👮‍♂️💙

After 24 years of dedicated service to the Topeka community, Lieutenant Ron Ekis is officially hanging up his badge and beginning a well-earned retirement! 🎖️👏

Lt. Ekis began his law enforcement career in December 1996 with the Dodge City (KS) Police Department, where he served as a Field Training Officer, trainer, SWAT Team member, and Corporal before joining the Topeka Police Department in March 2002.

Throughout his career with TPD, Lt. Ekis served in numerous leadership roles, including Patrol Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, Community Police Unit Supervisor, and Lieutenant.

⭐ 2007 – Promoted to Corporal where he served in Patrol.

⭐ 2008 – Promoted to Sergeant Community Police Unit, he worked closely with community partners, including the Topeka Housing Authority, Safe Streets, and Valeo Homeless Outreach, helping strengthen relationships and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

⭐ 2018 – Promoted to Lieutenant in March 2018, he served as TPD's Training Director, helping prepare and mentor the next generation of officers.

⭐ 2019 – Lt. Ekis returned to Patrol in December 2019, where he continued to lead by example and positively impact both fellow officers and the citizens he proudly served.

Lt. Ekis, thank you for your leadership, professionalism, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to public safety. Your 24 years of service to Topeka have left a lasting impact on our department and the community.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Ron Ekis on an outstanding career and wishing him a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retirement! Enjoy this next chapter — you've certainly earned it! 💙 👏 🎉

A BIG thank you to at Topeka ER & Hospital for stopping by the Topeka Police Department on October 28 with a delicious delivery of sweet treats in celebration of National First Responders Day! 🚔🚨

Your thoughtful gesture was a wonderful way to show appreciation for our officers and the work they do each day to serve and protect our community.

Our pawsome Topeka Police Department K-9 Dango is turning 3, and we're celebrating this hardworking member of the TPD K-9 Unit! 🥳🎈

When he's not busy searching for suspects or sniffing out illegal narcotics, Dango enjoys the simple pleasures in life — playing fetch with his favorite Kong toy 🎾 and catching some well-deserved ZZZs while snoring away in the back of TPD Officer Wohler's patrol vehicle! 🚔💤

Whether he's on duty protecting our community or off duty enjoying some playtime, Dango always gives it his all! 💙🐾

Today, October 28, we proudly honor and thank the brave men and women who answer the call to serve, protect and care for our community each and every day!

From our firefighters, police officers, sheriff's deputies, EMTs and paramedics to our 911 dispatchers and other emergency response personnel, these everyday heroes demonstrate extraordinary courage, compassion and commitment, often putting the safety and well-being of others before their own. ❤️💙

Emergencies don't wait for a convenient time, and neither do those who answer the call. Day and night, through long hours, challenging situations and personal risks, our first responders stand ready to help others when they need it most.

We also recognize the dedicated professionals working behind the scenes, including dispatchers and public works crews, whose important contributions help support emergency response efforts and keep our community safe.

👏 To ALL first responders: THANK YOU! Your unwavering dedication, selfless service and sacrifices do not go unnoticed. We are grateful for the difference you make in the lives of others and for your continued commitment to keeping Topeka and Shawnee County safe.

✅ Choose a designated sober driver before the festivities begin.

🚕 Arrange a rideshare, taxi or other safe transportation.

🚫 Never get behind the wheel after drinking. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your driving ability.

🏡 Hosting a Halloween Party?

🔑 Help keep impaired guests off the road.

🚖 Be prepared to arrange safe rides or overnight accommodations.

🥤 Offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages for guests and designated drivers.
