What began as a 2020 EcoChallenge project to save unrecyclable plastic from our landfill has become a beloved community program!

Thank you to our amazing community for dropping off a record-setting amount of clean tops lids and caps at bins around Tahoe and Truckee.

Now we need your help sorting them. Please join us at Truckee Elementary on October 3 & 4 for the Community Sort from 9 AM to 4 PM.

There will be food and drinks throughout the day and we will be running amazing giveaways.

We're developing a strategy to prioritize funding sources so that residents and businesses, especially those most impacted by high energy costs, can access upgrades that lower bills and improve comfort. It’s a roadmap for investing in climate solutions in a way that’s fair, inclusive, and community focused.

Could your home be more comfortable and energy efficient? Weatherize Truckee is a pilot program offered by the Town of Truckee, providing no-cost weatherization upgrades to income-qualified Truckee households. Improvements may include insulation, air sealing, and other upgrades that can help reduce energy use, lower utility costs, and improve indoor comfort and air quality.

Applications open October 1, 2026. The program will support up to 40 households through 2027, including households that need help accessing existing weatherization programs and households that do not qualify for other no-cost weatherization assistance.

One wrong item will ruin it all. A single bag or bouquet will send the whole bin to landfill. Only food waste is accepted in the food waste drop off bins. Bags must be removed. Yes, even "compostable" ones. Yard waste, flowers, soil, bags, and paper are not accepted.

Removed bags can be placed in the container next to the bin for easy disposal. See contamination? Pull it out yourself using the grabber or let us know!

Shared Service, Shared Responsibility

A reminder to be courteous to your Truckee neighbors and follow requirements posted for Truckee's community cardboard drop-off bins. Cardboard placed on the ground is illegal dumping and is a violation of the Town of Truckee Municipal Code Section 6.01.120.

Cardboard bins are emptied 5x/week Monday through Friday and an extra bin is added to the Sheriff Station on Fridays for the weekend.

These drop-off bins are for Truckee resident use only. If the bins are full, or if you have cardboard from a business, you can take your cardboard to Eastern Regional Landfill (ERL) for free recycling. ERL is located at 900 Cabin Creek Road, off Hwy 89 South.

The Town of Truckee is hosting a small community conversation to learn about renters' experiences with energy costs, home comfort, and home improvements. Your feedback will help shape future programs and funding that support cleaner, healthier, and more energy-efficient homes in our community.

TIME: 5:30–6:30 pm
LOCATION: Truckee - specific location will be shared with attendees

What to expect:
• Small, informal discussion (5–10 participants)
• No technical knowledge needed
• Food provided
• Gift card provided as a thank you
• Children's activities available

Your participation is completely voluntary. We will not contact your landlord, participation will not affect your housing, and you will not be asked about immigration status or other sensitive personal information. You may also choose to participate anonymously.

Need a recycle or yard waste cart? The final free pickup date this summer will be Saturday, July 18, from 8 - 11 am.

Each Truckee household can receive one recycle cart and up to three yard waste carts, included in your base services. Pick up a cart free of charge and avoid any delivery fees. Call TTSD at (530) 583-7800 to reserve a cart for the pickup event, and receive the address for the pickup location.

The next green waste drop-off event is Friday, July 10, 8 am - 1 pm at the Truckee Rodeo Grounds. Drop-off your residential yard waste, including pine needles, shrubs, and branches. Visit NevadaCountyCA.gov/GreenWaste for more info on acceptable items.
