The story of the heroism and sacrifice of FDNY Squad 1 Firefighter, Stephen Siler on 9/11 is what inspired his family to create the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Its purpose is to support fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military service members and their families. Some of our very own members of our Tulsa Fire family have graciously received assistance from this Foundation. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, we honor Firefighter Stephen Siler and his heroism ♥️

Stephen Siller had already finished his shift and was driving home to his wife and five children when the 9/11 attacks began. Then he abandoned his car, strapped nearly 60 pounds of firefighting gear to his body, and ran through a blocked tunnel toward the burning World Trade Center. He was 34. He never came home.

Siller was a firefighter with FDNY Squad 1 in Brooklyn.

That morning, he heard that a plane had struck the World Trade Center.

He turned around.

The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was jammed with traffic.

Emergency vehicles couldn't get through.

Siller couldn't wait.

He grabbed his gear and ran.

Nearly 60 pounds.

Helmet.

Air tank.

Protective equipment.

He ran through the tunnel on foot.

Then he emerged near the World Trade Center.

The towers were burning.

People were fleeing.

Firefighters were moving toward the buildings.

Siller joined them.

He went inside.

He kept working while the towers were collapsing around him.

At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower fell.

Siller was still at the scene.

He was k!LLed that morning.

His family never got him back.

His wife, Sally, lost her husband.

His five children lost their father.

He had been on his way home.

Instead, he turned around and ran toward people he had never met.

His family later created the **Tunnel to Towers Foundation** in his honor.

The foundation began with a single purpose, carrying forward the sacrifice Siller made on 9/11.

It later expanded its work to support fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military service members and their families.

The tunnel became more than the place where Siller started his final run.

It became a symbol of the choice he made.

He couldn't drive through.

So he ran.

He was carrying almost 60 pounds of gear.

He knew the towers were burning.

He knew firefighters were going inside.

He knew he was running toward an unfolding catastrophe.

He went anyway.

Stephen Siller wasn't supposed to be at the World Trade Center that morning.

His shift was over.

He was going home.

Then he heard people needed help.

He turned around.

**He had 60 pounds of gear on his back.**

**His family was waiting at home.**

**He ran into the fire anyway.**

‼️ Thank you ‼️

Back on Tuesday, July 7th, we organized a fundraiser at McNellie’s downtown for one of our Tulsa Firefighters, Cason Savage, who was seriously burned while battling a fire back in May. Also, during his recovery, Cason became a new father to a precious baby girl!

The citizens of Tulsa and our Tulsa Fire family showed up in a big way! Through Venmo donations, cash collected in the boot at the event, and McNellie’s so generously donating a portion of their proceeds that evening, we were able to raise over $7,000 for Cason and his sweet family!!

Thank you to everyone who donated and attended, and a very big special THANK YOU to McNellie's for always being such an amazing supporter of our Tulsa Firefighters!! 🚒♥️

On May 22, 2026, one of our Tulsa Firefighters, Cason Savage, was seriously burned while battling a fire at the Port of Catoosa.

Despite sustaining significant injuries in the line of duty, Cason demonstrated remarkable strength and determination throughout his treatment at Hillcrest Medical Center’s Alexander Burn Unit. He underwent several medical procedures, including skin graft surgery, and remained focused on his recovery with the support of his family, fellow Firefighters, and the Tulsa community.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7th we will be holding a fundraiser for Cason. We'll be set up at Mcnellie's Pub in downtown Tulsa from 5-8pm and they have agreed to donate a portion of all proceeds from that timeframe to Cason's recovery! We will also be passing around a boot for cash donations, as well as we will have cards with a QR code on them for donations to be made that way.

If you will be unable to make the fundraiser on the 7th and you'd like to make a donation in the meantime, the Tulsa Firefighters Benevolent Fund has a Venmo account. It is in Venmo . Just put Cason Savage in the "What's this for?" box when paying so that it will be sent directly to Cason and his family.

Please help us spread the word. We look forward to seeing everyone there to show our support for our Firefighter Savage and his young family!
