Throwback Thursday takes us back to May 1967 with this photo of The Clinic Pharmacy at 278 N. Main in Valentine.

The June 7, 1951 edition of the Cherry County News announced the opening of the new business owned by Mr. Ralph Fisher, noting that it would “now be operated as a Walgreen Agency” in its new location. Before the pharmacy was built, the lot held a building that was later moved to Highway 20 for Nelsen Plumbing.

The grand opening drew nearly 2,000 people! As part of the celebration, Mrs. Jack Hall received a brand new Maytag washer from Clements as a grand opening gift. The store carried just about everything imaginable — pharmaceuticals, vet supplies, cosmetics, baby supplies, candy, small electrical appliances, leather goods, cameras and film, clocks, watches, and more!

Do you remember shopping at The Clinic Pharmacy? What was your favorite thing to pick up there? And does anyone remember the business next door — Lee’s? Lee's 5 & 10?

📚 Books, community, and a little bit of magic — right here in Valentine.

Have you spotted this book cart outside our local bookstore, The Plains Trading Company Booksellers? Stop and take a peek! Browse the selection, find something that calls to you, and leave a $2 donation for the Friends of the Library. That's it. Easy as that.

This sweet setup is thanks to the bookstore's generosity — and it's a perfect example of what makes this community something special. The library and the bookstore may be two different places, but we share the same heart: getting great books into the hands of readers.

Haven't been inside the bookstore lately? Make this your excuse. They carry far more than books, and there are little treasures in there just waiting to be found.

Two dollars. A great read. And a community that shows up for each other. 💛

Today was the kick-off of our Summer Discovery Series for grades K-5th at VPL, and what a fun way to start! 🦖🌎

We welcomed Toby the Time-Traveling Paleontologist, who had kids completely engaged as they explored the Mesozoic Era. From dinosaurs to drifting continents, Toby brought prehistoric history to life! Along the way, he kept everyone laughing with plenty of questions, interactive moments, and even a few jokes for the adults in the room, too!

Next week, we’ll be digging closer to home as we explore the ancient Niobrara and the real fossils found right here in the Nebraska Sandhills. Haven't signed your kiddos up yet? Give us a call or stop by the library!

Tomorrow is the day! 🦖⏳

Our Summer Discovery Series kicks off at 10:00 AM with special guest comedian Professor Wobblebottom — a time-traveling paleontologist ready to take us on a hilarious romp through time where laughter and learning go hand in hand! This summer, he is performing nearly 100 library programs across 5 states, and we’re excited to bring this unforgettable crowd experience to VPL!

This event is for kids who completed K–5th grade during the 2025–2026 school year. Didn’t get signed up? No worries — we still have room for them tomorrow! We can’t wait to see you there!

Throwback Thursday 🌲🍳

This vintage postcard from Phelps Photo is labeled “Valentine Park Kitchen – Free for Campers.” The scene shows a heavily wooded corner of what was likely Valentine City Park, where travelers could stop, rest, and cook a meal.

But the most interesting part of this postcard might actually be on the back.

The card is postmarked July 9, 191? and was mailed to Regina Iverson in Los Angeles, California from C. A. Ruby here in Valentine. In his note, he invited Regina to come visit—and to bring Minnie. Apparently, that invitation worked out.

The Valentine Republican reported on Friday, March 28, 1913 that Charles and Minnie Ruby had been married in Chadron on March 22, 1913. "The newlyweds immediately returned to Valentine, where the groom had already prepared a home for the reception of his bride".

Charles A. Ruby went on to become a well-known figure in the community. He taught school in Wood Lake, later became an attorney, served as Cherry County Attorney from 1913–1917, and eventually served as Valentine’s mayor.

All from a little postcard inviting someone to come visit.

Have you ever heard the story of Charles and Minnie Ruby, or do you know where this park kitchen once stood in Valentine? 👀
