This week's vintage postcard takes us to the old Deer Park Golf Club, that was located 2½ miles east of Valentine on Highway 12. The back caption reads: "View looking North over No. 2 Green at Deer Park Golf Club." The year and photographer are unknown.

📚 BOOK CLUB IS BACK! 📚

Our Adult Book Club meets the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, and we’re kicking off a new season on September 1 at 7:00 PM at the library!

🍿 September is our BYOB Meeting — Bring Your Own Book!
Come share what you’ve been reading over the summer. What did you love? What did you hate? What should everyone else read or definitely avoid? 😂After the meeting, we’ll put together a list of everyone’s recommended reads and send it out so you’ll have plenty of ideas for your TBR list!

📖 We’ll also be passing out the book for our October 6 discussion: Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke.

This one should make for a VERY interesting discussion! Several of our readers have landed on very different sides of this book. It seems to be one of those love-it-or-hate-it reads and those are often the books that make for the BEST discussions!

Ever heard of LitRPG?

It’s a book genre that mixes traditional sci-fi/fantasy with video game rules. Think stats, experience points, and loot drops—but in a novel! Because it uses the same fast-paced progression as gaming, it's a massive hit for gamers and an incredible "gateway" for anyone who claims they hate reading. 🎮📚

If you want to try it, start with the gold standard: Dungeon Crawler Carl (pictured). The plot: Earth is flattened by aliens, and the survivors are forced into a deadly, 18-level underground reality TV dungeon. Carl has to survive gladiator-style chaos, a crazy AI system, and a psychotic world, all while wearing boxer shorts and traveling with his ex-girlfriend's dramatic show cat, Princess Donut. 🐱💥

There are zero boring, slow-paced chapters. It is pure adrenaline, explosions, absurd humor, and tactical survival. If you love gaming, action movies, or dark comedy, you will devour this series.

Pro-tip: If physical reading isn't your thing, the audiobook version narrated by Jeff Hays is legendary. It feels more like a full Hollywood movie production or an immersive podcast than a traditional book! 🎧🔥 Have you tried this genre? Any recommendations?

☎️ Throwback Thursday ☎️

Can you imagine the excitement of making your very first DIALED phone call?

In October 1964, the front page of the Valentine Newspaper announced that dial telephone service would officially begin in Valentine on Sunday, November 15. According to Northwestern Bell Manager G. H. Kreuch, the change would modernize local telephone service and make placing calls easier than ever.

To help everyone prepare, Northwestern Bell invited the public to the Veterans Club basement on October 31 at 4:00 p.m. for a special presentation. Attendees watched an instructional motion picture called Direct Distance Dialing, saw a live dialing demonstration, and even enjoyed refreshments.

It's funny to think that something once considered cutting-edge technology is now almost obsolete. Today, most of us simply tap a name on our cell phone contacts without giving it a second thought. In fact, we've had kids at the library who don't know how to make a long-distance call on our landline because they've never had to dial the 1 + phone number before!

🎨 Don’t Miss This Beautiful Art Show! On display now through September 1. 🎨

The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) Travel Show is on display for a short time at the Valentine Public Library. The exhibit features 26 award-winning works of art from talented artists across Nebraska, including local-area artists.

The ANAC Travel Show travels throughout Nebraska for an entire year, visiting 18 communities along the way. After Valentine, the artwork's next stop is Ainsworth.

🚕 Throwback Thursday: Valentine Taxi! 🚕

One of our followers, Amy L., recently shared this fun bit of local history:
"Many moons ago Valentine had a taxi company! Wonder if anyone remembers it or who the owner was – Burton Hutchison, Jr."

Of course, we had to do a little digging in the archives… and here’s what we found

Our first found mention was in December of 1947 where it was noted Burton Hutchinson, Jr. was visiting Valentine from the West Coast during the holidays, with plans to return to California after the “Yuletide Season.” But somewhere along the way, he came home and put down roots here.

By 1951, advertisements for Valentine Taxi were appearing in the newspaper, proudly offering: “24 Hour Service, Any Place – Any Time”.

In March of 1953, Burton married Jean Hedelson. The announcement shared that Jean worked at Valentine Telephone and Burton owned and operated Valentine Taxi. It also noted his service in the Armed Forces, including 18 months in Germany and France.

By May 27, 1954, the business changed hands and was listed under new management: Ted Howe and C.J. (Cleets) Goodsell.

The final mention we found was April 12, 1962, when the "established business" was listed for sale. The ad described it as ideal for a semi-retired individual or as supplementary income—books open for inspection, and available with or without a car.

The Valentine Public Library is working to build a more complete collection of Valentine High School yearbooks so that these pieces of our community's history can be preserved and made available for future generations.
