Update:Tornado warning has expired. Still calling for 70 mph winds and nickel size hail possible with this storm.

Keep an eye on the weather tonight! There’s a tornado warning in effect moving through the middle of Cherry County currently heading towards the McKelvie/Merritt area. Tune into local radio or the US National Weather Service North Platte Nebraska for immediate updates. Deputies are monitoring the storms and are available if needed.

Thank you to all 911 dispatchers this week, and a special thanks to our very own in Cherry County! Dispatchers have a very stressful and often thankless job but we have so many who show up every day and do the job well. If you see one of them around this week, stop and say thanks for the long hours in the box keeping us, and you, safe.

We’ve received quite a few calls for smoke southwest of the 83/20 interchange and south of Valentine. It is a controlled burn and VFD is aware.

We’ve received a few calls this week of scammers claiming to be employees of the Cherry County Sheriff’s Office and trying to acquire personal information. Just another reminder, if you’re ever concerned that you may not be speaking to an actual employee of our office, we have no issue with you hanging up and calling back on our non-emergency line at 402-376-1890. This will take you to our dispatch who can get you in touch with a deputy. Also, in no instance will a deputy ever ask for any payment or bank information over the phone. Any court fees, bonds, fines, or anything of that nature is paid in person at the court house or online. We cannot and will not accept payment for anything like this, so if anyone claiming to represent our office is asking for money on the phone, it is a scam. Any time payment is requested in gift cards, crypto, cash cards etc, it should also be a red flag in any instance. If you feel you may be a target in a scam, feel free to get in touch and we will help you out.
