For Lawrence Almagno, running for Rhode Island State Representative is about more than winning an election. It is about bringing a practical, real-world perspective to the State House and giving residents of West Warwick and Coventry a stronger voice in government.
Almagno is running for State Representative in District 27, drawing on more than a decade as an attorney and small-business owner. He is a founding partner of Almagno Law, where he represents working families, injured workers, and small businesses. He was recognized as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers in 2022 and 2023.
But his connection to the community extends well beyond his law practice.
A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
Almagno grew up in Rhode Island and has made community involvement a priority. Lawrence founded the American Youth Rugby League Association, bringing toughness, teamwork, and resilience to young people across the region. And it’s those qualities he says he now brings to his work and his campaign.
His interest in the state’s economic challenges is also personal. Almagno’s father worked in manufacturing, and he has watched the decline of Rhode Island’s manufacturing base affect families and communities. He believes that Rhode Island has never fully recovered from the loss of manufacturing jobs following NAFTA and has seen friends leave the state because of the loss of economic opportunity and the rising cost of living.
That experience has shaped his belief that Rhode Island needs to become a place where people can afford to live, start a business, and build a future.
BRINGING A PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVE TO SMITH HILL
As an attorney, he has handled more than 2,000 matters, approximately a dozen jury trials, and more than 50 bench trials. That experience, he believes, gives him a different perspective on legislation. In his work, he has seen what he describes as a disconnect between decisions made on Smith Hill and the realities faced by business owners and working families.
One of the reasons Almagno decided to run is his perspective that legislators need to better understand how their decisions affect people outside the State House. Almagno believes he can explain the practical effects that proposed legislation can have on ordinary Rhode Islanders.
AFFORDABILITY THE CENTER OF HIS PLATFORM
His campaign platform includes his major priorities: making Rhode Island more affordable for families, supporting small businesses and economic growth, and fixing infrastructure while keeping doctors in Rhode Island.
He wants to reduce what he sees as unnecessary government spending and bureaucratic burdens while lowering costs for families and small businesses. His proposals include reducing electricity costs, protecting retirees from rising property taxes, and eliminating state taxes on pensions, Social Security benefits, and retirement income.
For Almagno, however, affordability isn’t simply a campaign talking point. He says he hears about the problem directly from residents.
While going door-to-door in Coventry and West Warwick, he has met people who are struggling with the high cost of energy. Those conversations have reinforced his belief that Rhode Island needs to address the underlying causes of rising costs rather than simply responding with temporary fixes.
CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE BUSINESSES CAN GROW
Almagno also believes Rhode Island’s economic future depends on making the state more attractive to businesses.
As a small-business owner himself, he says he understands the challenges entrepreneurs face. Almagro understands that businesses don’t want to come to Rhode Island when they face crumbling infrastructure and costs that make the state less competitive.
His campaign emphasizes reducing bureaucratic burdens and creating an environment where local businesses can grow. He also wants Rhode Island to prepare for the changes brought by artificial intelligence so that the transformation creates jobs rather than eliminates them.
KEEPING DOCTORS IN RHODE ISLAND
Healthcare is another part of Almagno’s economic agenda. He points to lower reimbursement rates for doctors in Rhode Island compared with neighboring Massachusetts and Connecticut which has resulted in too many medical professionals leaving the state. Almagno says he would support bringing reimbursement rates closer to those in neighboring states to help keep doctors here. The broader goal, he says, is to make Rhode Island a place where professionals want to stay, businesses want to invest, and families can afford to build their lives.
A VOICE FOR ALL RHODE ISLANDERS
Perhaps the most striking part of his platform is Almagno’s emphasis on broader representation. He noted that in his interactions with voters at the doors, even many Democrats have expressed support for his campaign because they want new voices in the State House. His goal is not simply to represent Republicans but to bring a different perspective to the General Assembly and challenge what he sees as the disconnect between government and the people it serves. Almagno says he wants the General Assembly to make Rhode Island prosperous for everyone, not just those who are connected to power.
For a candidate whose professional life has centered on representing people in difficult circumstances, that message is consistent with the reason he says he entered the race: to bring his experience outside of government into the State House and advocate for the people and businesses that he believes are too often overlooked.
For Lawrence Almagno, the campaign is ultimately about making Rhode Island more affordable, more competitive, and more responsive to the people who live and work here.
