As home based care continues to grow, innovation is helping more patients receive high quality respiratory care where they want to be most: at home.

In a recent interview with The American Journal of Managed Care, AAHomecare member Doug Francis, CEO of Rhythm Healthcare, discusses how advancements in portable oxygen concentrators are improving patient independence, supporting better outcomes, and helping reduce hospital readmissions while lowering costs across the health care system.

Advocacy efforts continue to gain momentum on Capitol Hill.

As Congress heads into the August recess, several key HME legislative priorities are moving forward, including the House passage of the Choices for Increased Mobility Act (H.R. 1703) and continued efforts to delay Medicare competitive bidding for urology and ostomy supplies and continuous glucose monitors.

As AAHomecare's Senior Vice President of Public Policy, Jay Witter, noted:

"The legislation is based on the removal of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) from competitive bidding in 2020. We have time. Congress has stopped the program after contracts were executed. They can stop it at any time."

AAHomecare's leadership, Board Chair, and general counsel met with White House staff this week to press the case for reform on RID inclusion within the Competitive Bidding Program.

Our message was direct: the current approach creates real barriers to access for the patients HME providers and manufacturers serve every day. Wherever there's an opportunity to advocate on behalf of our members, whether on Capitol Hill, with CMS, or at the White House, we're taking it.

AAHomecare will continue engaging at every level of government to protect patient access to home medical equipment. No stone unturned.

What happens when access to the medical supplies you depend on is determined by cost instead of medical need?

In this conversation, patient advocate Elynn Mantell shares her journey after 23 surgeries and explains why proposed changes to Medicare's Competitive Bidding Program could jeopardize access to the specialized bowel and bladder care supplies that more than one million Americans rely on.

Watch as Elynn puts a human face on the policy debate and discusses what's at stake for patients, caregivers, and providers.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1703, the Choices for Increased Mobility Act, by voice vote, advancing the legislation to the Senate.

The bill would expand access to manual wheelchairs constructed with carbon fiber and titanium materials for Medicare beneficiaries while remaining budget neutral.

This milestone reflects years of advocacy and collaboration across the DMEPOS community, patient organizations, manufacturers, suppliers, and congressional champions. AAHomecare thanks everyone who has helped move this legislation forward and looks forward to continuing these efforts as the bill advances in the Senate.
