NGA convened the Governors Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) in Arlington, VA last month, bringing together homeland security advisors from 40 states, territories and DC to swap strategies and strengthen the nation's homeland security enterprise.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger welcomed the group and shared how her state's Unified Readiness Framework has strengthened homeland security preparedness. GHSAC members also engaged with federal leaders including Congressman Matt Van Epps, DEA Administrator Terrence Cole, and Acting CISA Director Nick Andersen.

🎉 Happy 176th Statehood Day, California! 🌉🐻

On September 9, 1850, the Golden State became the 31st state of the Union. Fueled by the Gold Rush, California skipped territorial status entirely and went straight to statehood, one of the only states ever to do so. NGA issued the following statement in response to the passage of a continuing resolution to fund the federal government through December 11.

"Fiscal stability for state and territorial operations is vital to serving the people. By extending funding for key programs in transportation, disaster relief, and safety net services—and by pausing pending adjustments to federal grant rules—this measure enables work to continue toward full-year appropriations and promotes critical continuity of services." - NGA CEO Brandon Tatum

Across the country, state service programs like the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation are already proving it — acting as laboratories for workforce innovation while meeting real needs in local communities.

NGA's Service United initiative, led by Chair Governor Wes Moore, is working to bring that impact to every state and territory, with a goal of 1 million Americans serving each year within the decade.

Through the Service United Fund, governors can now apply for grants of up to $1.5 million to plan, build or advance service programs in their states and territories.
