Some of the most demanding positions aboard any ship in the U.S. Navy include executive officer, damage control officer, security officer, safety officer, training officer, anti-terrorism officer, and department head.

On board most Navy ships, someone is responsible for each of those jobs, and they often have strong backup, like a deputy or assistant, and a team of Sailors to help carry out all related tasks. That’s not the case on USNS Yukon (T-AO 202). On the fleet replenishment oiler, Navy Reserve Lieutenant Michael Cook does it all.

Pvt. Stephen C. Mason and four other Soldiers left on a mission to the enemy lines near Beek, Netherlands, Nov. 3, 1944.

They were charged with gathering information on German fortifications and, if possible, capture an enemy soldier for interrogation.

Mason was assigned to Headquarters Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Infantry Division, which had served in Operation Market Garden – the invasion of the German-occupied Netherlands – and saw continued action in the Netherlands until mid-November.

Two days later, two Soldiers returned from the patrol.

One of the survivors, Staff Sgt. Russell O’Neal, reported that Mason was killed while trying to destroy an enemy machine-gun position. Because he was killed in German-held territory, his fellow Soldiers could not retrieve his body.

American forces never captured the area and Mason was listed missing in action. At the time, his body was not recovered.

Physical training at home is less a luxury than an absolute necessity for Army Reserve Soldiers.

While this usually relegates these troops to solitary workouts, an online program under the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) called VictoryFit is making their regular exercises a group effort again.

“Only doing PT once a battle assembly isn’t enough,” U.S. Army Sgt. James R. Moore said.

Moore, the master fitness trainer for the 642nd Regional Support Group, leads morning classes three days a week using live video on social media. The group currently uses a private page where he also posts he workout of the day the evening before so Soldiers can ask questions and be ready to follow along.
