In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, over the next several weeks ROA will be spotlighting Hispanic American Reservists who made an impact as Citizen Warriors.

Most know Roberto Clemente as a baseball legend and humanitarian, but Clemente was also a member of the Marine Corps Reserve.

Clemente enlisted in the USMCR as an infantryman in 1958. He spent six years in the USMCR, training and serving during his Pittsburgh Pirates offseasons. He served six months on active duty at Parris Island and Camp LeJeune while he completed his basic and infantry training.

His commitment to service extended far beyond the baseball diamond through his extensive charity work in Latin America and the Caribbean. He ultimately lost his life in an airplane crash in December 1972 while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Clemente was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was also posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 1973 and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.

We had a fantastic day yesterday hosting Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force Reserve, and U.S. Public Health Service Ready Reserve Corps representatives for our Joint Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill.

After starting our day with a keynote speech from Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-01), a retired Marine Corps lieutenant general and former commanding general of Marine Forces Reserve, our 10 teams held more than 60 meetings with Members of Congress - including Rep. Bergman and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) - and congressional staff to discuss the congressional priorities for each group, including Duty Status Reform; RC fleet modernization; health and dental care; and Ready Reserve funding and benefits.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible, including the Marine Corps Reserve Association and all of our partners representing the USPHS Ready Reserve Corps and the Air Force Reserve.

Antiquated pay and personnel systems. Working without pay or long delays in receiving Reserve pay. Glaring gaps in travel benefits (including having to pay for travel out of your own pocket), retirement pay, medical care, and insurance.

These are just some of the maddening and frustrating things that Steve and Matt talked about on this RC Forums episode along with how ROA is fighting to change or address all of these issues for the Reserve Component.

According to Steve, "the American Revolution started with a Citizen-Soldier NCO getting his troops ready to fight; ten miles in DC is the least we can do to honor that service!"

Yesterday, ROA and Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) held a press conference urging Congress to take action on the Susan E. Lukas 9/11 Servicemember Fairness Act (H.R. 5339).

ROA's CEO, John Hashem, and Rep. Subramanyam were joined as speakers by Joe Kornoff, Executive Director of the Pentagon Memorial Fund, Inc.; Jack Du Teil, President of the Military Coalition; and Jon Nutman, Policy Advisor, Air Force Sergeants Association.

This important legislation would extend PACT Act benefits to servicemembers who reported for duty at the Pentagon between September 11 and November 19, 2001, ensuring they can receive presumptive service-connected benefits for illnesses related to toxic exposure following the 9/11 attack.
