“Advocacy!” Howard University Announces the 2020 Virtual Homecoming Event Schedule and Theme

October 7, 2020
Howard University presents “Advocacy” as the theme for the 2020 Howard Homecoming festivities, scheduled October 10-18, 2020. The full calendar of events is available online at https://homecoming.howard.edu/.
“Advocacy” is woven into the fabric of Howard University’s DNA. Since the institution’s founding in 1867 the faculty, staff and students have embodied the mission of truth and service through the pursuit of social justice in numerous ways, including marching, protesting, and lobbying. Now, more than 150 years later, the social unrest of today’s society has made clear that the need for advocacy must press on. Howard University will continue to lead by example and demonstrate the variety of ways our community can engage: Advocacy through your Voice, Advocacy through your Dollars and Advocacy through your Vote. While this year’s Homecoming will be virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic, now is an optimal time for us to unify our spirits around our collective goals of social justice, inclusivity and equity for all.

SPREAD THE WORD- #SQUADUPHOMECOMING (When We All Vote Event)

A one hour virtual HBCU/Divine 9 homecoming-themed voter education/voter registration event that will stream September 26, 2020 at 8:00pm ET.

On August 26th, in Partnership with the Department of Alumni Relations (DAR) and Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote over 450 Alumni completed Voting Squad Captain Training. One Howard Alum, Dr. Jennifer Haley, MD (BS ’88) not only attended the training but also took heed to the call to action. She reached out or her sorority sisters, Spring ’86 Alpha Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Line and they were determined to do what they could do to get as many people as possible to register to vote. From this discussion the idea expanded to include other Greek Organizations from Spring ’86 which now has resulted in a mega- size virtual voter registration event with a Homecoming theme : #SQUADUPHOMECOMING

•This non-partisan event will feature athletes, celebrities, musical talent and organizations that include 2 Chainz, Step Afrika and more. #SquadUpHomecoming will also highlight Black-owned restaurants featured on the app for DoorDash Delivery Service, which will offer $0 delivery fees for their merchant partners through the end of 2020.
•The purpose of this event is to excite potential voters ages 18-25 and to get them to register to vote and motivated to participate in the upcoming election.
•For more information, email [email protected].

Please let HUAA know if you are planning an large virtual event and we will share your info. All we ask is that you to use this link to register voters: weall.vote/howard as we are trying to achieve a goal of 2000 registered voters.

The Howard University Alumni Club of Richmond (HUAC RVA) is pleased to support Dr. Wakeshi Benson, distinguished alumna of the Howard University College of Dentistry Orthodontic Specialty Program and HUAC RVA member, in a Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) fundraiser through WB Inspirations. Although the use of PPE is a CDC required protocol, it is still expensive and difficult for many medical providers to obtain. The fundraiser will raise funds through GoFundMe donations to distribute free PPE to Richmond area health care providers affected by COVID-19.

Donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/covid19-resources-for-healthcare-workers?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet

100% of proceeds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be used to purchase PPE distributed locally. HUAC/RVA encourages Bison alumni, family, and friends to donate to this worthy cause.

Please follow this event to receive updates on the distribution of PPE at a later date.

Dear Bison Family, Join THE HUAA for Its Virtual Inauguration Celebration as we celebrate our very own fellow Bison, THE Madam Vice President Kamala Harris as she takes office and prepares to lead the United States of America. COVID-19 stopped us from being together in person, but nothing could stop this party! Now, we are sure you all remember your days on the yard and parties in Blackburn! Well, today, we hope you will hearken back to those fun times – with DJs and dancing and the kind of fun only we Bison know how to have! And what’s even greater is that we’re partying with a purpose! Not only are we celebrating one of our own, but we have the opportunity to support the future Kamala Harrises that are enrolled at Howard and need our financial assistance to finish their college education and rise to their full potential. Unfortunately, there are far too many students whose ability to remain at Howard is threatened, but with your help, they, too, can become the leaders our country needs. We have alumni DJs battling: DJ C Devone, DJ Paul Howard, DJ Premonition and DJ Legendary Chris Washington. They’re competing to see who can raise the most money for the Howard University Alumni Association Emergency Scholarship Fund – so no matter which DJ wins, our students come out on top. We hope you decide to join in and have fun on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 7PM Eastern. . Register today as space is limited by clicking the graphic or the link listed below.
