This , we celebrate the remarkable life and contributions of Dr. Clinton Battle. Born in the 1920s, Dr. Battle’s pioneering work in medicine and civil rights left an indelible mark on Indianola, MS, and the nation. From separating conjoined twins, Lillian and Linda Matthews, in the 1950s to his efforts in revitalizing the local NAACP chapter, he embodied resilience and leadership. Let’s honor Dr. Battle’s legacy by recognizing his dedication to advancing medicine and civil rights. His story inspires us to continue the fight for equality and justice.

Mrs. Devine was born in Mobile, Alabama and grew up in Canton, Mississippi. After graduating from Tougaloo College, she worked as an insurance agent before becoming a schoolteacher. Mrs. Devine promptly joined CORE workers in Canton's voter registration initiative. She was on her way home from work when she saw singing coming from C.O. Chinn's motel on Franklin Street. Policemen drove back and forth outside. "I decided to go inside the building to see what was going on," Mrs. Devine recalled. Inside, CORE's George Raymond and Dave Dennis "were talking about voter registration and civil rights." Canton had no registered Black voters in 1963, despite the fact that African Americans made up 75 percent of the population.

It deeply saddens me to learn of the passing of the remarkable Joe Madison. Joe was not just a radio talk show host; he was a beacon of truth, a voice of integrity that resonated with listeners daily. My heart goes out to his family as they navigate through this time of sorrow. May his legacy continue to inspire, and may his spirit live on in the hearts of many.

We've reached another year of an incredible Black History Month! Personally, I believe that Black History should never be limited to a particular month, but rather that we should learn to value all aspects of black culture in every way possible. African Americans have historically been neglected and viewed negatively, yet there is now a rising appreciation for our unique characteristics amongst ourselves. I encourage you to continue embracing black culture in every manner imaginable.

As an ardent hunter, I find tremendous joy in the enthusiasm of children for hunting. I've been a hunter for years, and it has taught me some valuable life lessons. Patience and focus are two traits I've learned over my many years of hunting. Things don't always go as planned in life, but we must keep focused on our goals, whatever they may be, and be patient while we wait for them to come true.

Renewing the partnership with Greyhound has greatly benefited Jackson and the Second Congressional District. Not everyone can afford air travel, so renewing our contract with Greyhound is excellent for us. I'd want to thank the Greyhound personnel and the Jackson Redevelopment Authority for their collaborative efforts to make this possible.
