Congratulations to our third recruit class of 2026 – Brett Berberich, Austin Gromek, Abigail Gerney, Andrew Shelek, Brandon Taylor and Jordan Chiprich!

Today, they successfully completed the initial eight weeks of basic training with our training division and are ready to take on the next chapter in their firefighting journey. All three will be assigned to a platoon and begin their probationary phase next week.

This morning, the Wheeling Fire Department had the opportunity to provide Elm Grove Elementary staff with hands-on training in First Aid, CPR, and AED skills as they prepare for the start of the new school year next week.

Our firefighters covered CPR techniques for both adults and children, along with important lifesaving skills that can make a difference when seconds count.

Thank you to Elm Grove Elementary for allowing us to be part of their back-to-school preparation!

On Friday, Rescue 1 personnel assisted with a trauma training session alongside WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital. The training included a hands-on demonstration of how to safely extricate a patient from a vehicle crash.
The evening course, held at Wheeling University, included classroom instruction as well as practical training on various methods of treating patients with traumatic injuries.
We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside our healthcare partners to enhance our skills and provide the best possible care to our patients.

We’d like to thank WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital for donating a technical rescue training mannequin to our department.

This realistic, high-quality mannequin will be used to train our crews in vehicle accidents, confined space, high-angle, structural collapse, and hazmat scenarios.

It allows our members to practice patient contact, medical intervention, packaging, and removal in a way that’s more realistic than anything we’ve had before.

A Flood Watch remains in effect (and has been expanded north slightly) for areas south and west of Pittsburgh through 8 AM Wednesday. Recruit class 26-03 spent most of the day training with the crews from Rescue 1 and Squad 1, where they learned the skills and techniques used in vehicle extrications, including operating the Jaws of Life.
A special thank you to our neighbors across the street, Ace Garage, for providing an old vehicle for this valuable hands-on training.
