We want to thank everyone for sharing a beautiful evening with us at our National Night Out event. We want to thank our partner agencies for attending and representing their agencies to the our community.

We cannot do this without our closest partner the Northfield Township Police Department. We appreciate them everyday for their commitment to our community.

We also want to thank the Whitmore Lake Public Schools for allowing us to use the Main St Campus again this year.

Thank you to everyone that stopped by to enjoy the evening. We hope you had fun and look forward to doing this again next year. Mark your calendars since NNO is scheduled for August 3rd, 2027.

Information for those that smell smoke today. This is the reason why.

Where is the smoke coming from? The answer is mostly from Canada, and some from Minnesota. Lightning from severe storms over the last weekend sparked several wildfires just north of Thunder Bay. These fires are mainly located in remote areas and are not accessible for normal fire trucks or firefighters. This is the case with many wildfires we see in Canada especially. They also span hundreds of miles. This isn't some small compact fire.

These fires are fairly close range for us here in Michigan, and typical summertime jet stream patterns steer our upper level winds from northwest to southeast. This means Michigan is literally in a perfect - but unfortunate spot for the downstream smoke of these fires.

Many people are asking when this ends, and truthfully, we don't know. We may see relief this weekend, but given we remain in that northwest flow pattern, smoke and poor air quality may continue for weeks - assuming this fire keeps burning.

Main St has been closed today. The original end date of the project was expected to be late October with the delayed start it has been pushed to mid-November. The detour route is US 23.
