Congratulations to Christina Unrein, Nurse Manager at our outpatient clinic in Hutchinson, for receiving the prestigious DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
The DAISY Nurse Leader Award shines a light on those who do not typically have direct patient care as part of their work and those who create an environment where compassionate, skillful care thrives.
Chris was nominated by not just one but four of her staff. Here’s a little of what they had to say:
- “Chris has created an environment where trust, compassion, mutual respect, and ethical behavior aren’t just expectations - they are everyday experiences.”
- “What truly sets Chris apart is her willingness to go above and beyond for both her staff and the veterans in our care. She readily fills in wherever she is needed; no job is above or beneath her.”
- “She believes in our capabilities, challenges us to do better, and inspires us all to become better professionals and people.”
- “She provides a supportive environment where compassion and clinical excellence are the standard. She sets standards high and makes sure she supports us to rise to those standards consistently.”
We’re proud to say you’re on our team, Chris, and appreciate the valuable leadership you bring to Dole VA.

June is about a digital reset. Taking a step back from screens can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and support better focus throughout the day. Reclaim your focus by making mindful choices about how you use technology. Try a short break, a “media fast,” or a few minutes of meditation to recharge.

How do you unplug and reset?

Stay healthy this BBQ season with these food safety tips :

⏰ Don’t leave food out for more than 2 hours.

🧊 Refrigerate leftovers right away so that the internal temperature reaches 41°F or below within 6 hours.

🚫 Don’t take chances with your health! If you don’t know how long food has been sitting around, toss it out.

If you haven’t been following the news in Kansas, the ticks are thick this year! K-State entomologists say it’s really just that tick season has been starting earlier due to early arrival of spring.
Ticks are known for carrying Lyme disease, but a bite from a lone star tick can cause alpha-gal syndrome, which essentially gives you an allergy to red meat (for life!).
