The Library also operates two Bookmobiles. The Wayne County Public Library consists of the Wooster Main library, two bookmobiles and six Branch libraries. Patrons of the Wayne County Public Library have additional user privileges at more than 40 libra

ries in Northeast Ohio through CLEVNET, a group of libraries linked by an automation system. Patrons may reserve materials at any of the CLEVNET member libraries in person or on-line. ⛽🚗Picture this: It’s 1962, and you pull into your local gas station. You don’t even have to get out of the car. An attendant pumps your gas, cleans your windshield, checks your fluids, and maybe even puts air in your tires. Full-service gas stations were the norm.

One Wooster business offering that kind of service was Leighty Shell Service, located at the corner of Beall and Winter Streets. Operated by Cliff Leighty, the station had been at this location since February 1961. Pictured with Leighty are attendants Jim Smith and Jim Nolletti.

Leighty Shell offered much more than gas, including tune-ups and minor repairs, tires, batteries, brake service, car washes, and roadside service. They even offered free pick-up and delivery after maintenance!

Cliff went on to spend more than 50 years in Wooster’s automotive business, operating several full-service stations before retiring in 2001. His retirement marked the closing of the last full-service gas station in the area—the end of an era.

We honor the extraordinary legacy of country music icon and lifelong children's literacy champion, Dolly Parton. Through her unwavering commitment to reading and education, she reminded us of the vital role libraries and literacy play in our communities, places where everyone has the opportunity to read, learn, imagine, and dream.

As Dolly once said, "I believe that if you can read, then you can self-educate yourself. There's a book out there on everything you want to know. I just think that it's important."

Her words continue to inspire us and serve as a powerful reminder that literacy opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and endless possibilities.

🎒🚸 Back to school means back on patrol!

Before crossing guards became the norm, Wooster had Schoolboy Patrols helping keep students safe—and these kids took their jobs seriously!

This shows patrol boy David Benninger on duty at Grant and Bowman Streets as the new school year got underway. According to the original caption, the schoolboy patrol members “started their work year early” on the first day of school, guarding crossings near Wooster’s schools.

And motorists were getting a reminder, too: Slow down in school zones and watch for kids! 👀
