This week’s Friday Face is the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Marines of MCAS Yuma.

EOD Marines are trained to identify and safely handle explosive hazards, protecting personnel and equipment while supporting the installation’s aviation and training missions. Whether responding to an emergency or sharpening their skills through training, these Marines rely on precision, teamwork and sound judgment to accomplish the mission.

Marine Corps Air Station Yuma received the 2026 Commander in Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence, recognizing MCAS Yuma as the Department of War's top Marine Corps' installation for fiscal year 2025.

The highly competitive presidential award recognizes the outstanding and innovative efforts of the servicemembers and civilian employees who operate and maintain U.S. military installations.

“This award, while bearing the Commander in Chief's name, truly belongs to the dedicated Marines, Sailors, civilian employees, and their families who make MCAS Yuma exceptional every single day,” said Col. David J. Bennett, commanding officer, MCAS Yuma.

Congratulations to our servicemembers and civilian employees, and thank you to the families and surrounding community who help make our mission possible.

MCAS Yuma held a September 11 memorial ceremony at the station chapel to honor the victims of the attacks and the first responders who answered the call in the aftermath.

Marines, Sailors, and civilians gathered to pay thier respects and observe a moment of silence. For many, the events of September 11 strenghtened their resolve to serve and defend the nation.

From routine flight operations to aircraft emergencies, ARFF Marines stand ready to protect personnel, aircraft and the installation. Their specialized training and rapid-response capabilities allow them to respond to aircraft fires, crashes and other emergencies aboard MCAS Yuma.

Their work behind the scenes helps make flight operations possible every day, providing an essential capability that protects our people while supporting the readiness and aviation mission of MCAS Yuma.

This week’s Friday Face is Cmdr. Pon Chanthaphon, the new command chaplain for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

A Florida native, Chanthaphon has served in the Navy as a chaplain for over 17 years. Chanthaphon provides confidential counseling, spiritual support and religious ministry to personnel aboard MCAS Yuma.

“Being a chaplain is about caring for people, for the whole person. Whether through counseling, spiritual guidance or simply being there to listen, I’m here to support the Marines, Sailors and families, and our civilian employees of MCAS Yuma.” - Cmdr. Chanthaphon

This week's Friday Face is Sgt. Rainer J. Wetzling III, an explosive ordnance disposal technician with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Yuma.

A Maryland native, Wetzling has served in the Marine Corps for seven years and has been stationed at MCAS Yuma for the past two years. He was recently awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his courageous response after witnessing a vehicle accident, providing immediate medical aid to injured individuals until additional help arrived.

"In a moment like that, if someone is seriously injured, time matters," said Wetzling. "I knew that as soon as it happened, I had to help in any way I could."

Meet the new commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Col. David J. Bennett.
With nearly three decades of Marine Corps service, Col. Bennett is excited to return to MCAS Yuma, having previously served here as a captain at MAWTS-1 early in his career.
"My family and I are incredibly proud to be back at MCAS Yuma. It's an honor to join this outstanding team, and I'm humbled by the opportunity to lead it. We're excited to give back to a community that has meant so much to us and to continue the strong partnership between the installation and Yuma."
