Zambia and Japan Strengthen Relations Through Sport

Today, 6 September 2026, Zambia hosted the 15th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Cup, organised by the Embassy of Japan and Kyokushin Karate International.

The two-day tournament was held at the National Sports Council in Lusaka.

The Guest of Honour, Permanent Secretary Mr. Kangwa Chileshe of the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, stated in his speech that karate was introduced in Zambia in the 1970s and has since grown into a widely practised discipline, with approximately 8,000 Zambians currently engaged across various styles, including Kyokushin, Shotokan, Dentokan, Kofukan and Goju-Ryu.

The Embassy of Japan was commended for its consistency in nurturing sport in Zambia over the years. Mr. Chileshe further noted that Zambia’s karate achieved Olympic recognition in 2021, following its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Japanese Ambassador, His Excellency Akiteru Mikami, encouraged all participants to demonstrate courage, perseverance and dedication. He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts for its contribution to the development of sport and the nurturing of young athletes.

In conclusion, Mr. Simba Mangaba, Executive Director of Kyokushin Kenbukaikan International, presented the “GANBARU DEGREE” to Permanent Secretary Mr. Chileshe on behalf of President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema. The award recognised the President’s strong cultural leadership, centred on perseverance, endurance and the spirit of giving one’s best even in difficult times.

CHOOVA 2026 PROMOTES SPORT, ROAD SAFETY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN EASTERN PROVINCE

Cyclists from across Eastern Province and other parts of the country today gathered in Chipata for the 22nd edition of the CHOOVA Bicycle Competition, an event that combined sport, road safety, healthy living and community development.

Held at the Chipata Golf Course under the theme “CHOOVA for Road Safety, Peace, Unity and Well-being,” the competition attracted participation from all 15 districts of Eastern Province.

The event was graced by the director of Sport in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, Mr. Gibson Muyaule who represented the Permanent Secretary Mr. Kangwa Chileshe.

The Ministry reaffirmed Government’s commitment to developing sport at community level, noting that initiatives such as CHOOVA provide opportunities for people to remain physically active while identifying and nurturing sporting talent.

The competition also carried an important road safety message, with cyclists and motorists encouraged to share the roads responsibly and prioritise human life over competition.

Eastern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. Lewis Mwape, who represented the Provincial Permanent Secretary, emphasised the need for continued support towards sports development, road safety and small-scale entrepreneurs in the province.

Chipata Central Member of Parliament Mr. George Mwanza also called on citizens to take an active role in growing the Zambian economy as highlighted by the Republican President's Grow Zambia Agenda.

The agenda places emphasis on increasing production, creating jobs, supporting businesses and expanding economic opportunities for citizens, with Government and the private sector expected to work together to drive national growth.

And Anti-Doping Officer and National Heroes Stadium Director Mr. Raphael Mulenga urged athletes to protect the integrity of sport by staying away from prohibited substances and methods.

The CHOOVA competition itself has its roots in 2002, when the late businessman Perry Patel introduced the event as a way of turning the bicycle, a familiar means of transport in Eastern Province, into a competitive community sport.

Over the years, the event has grown into a platform that brings together cyclists, businesses, communities and supporters while promoting healthy living and social interaction.

The 2026 edition also highlighted the importance of keeping young people engaged in positive activities, with participants encouraged to stay away from drug and substance abuse and embrace healthy lifestyles.

The prizes included motorbikes, bicycles and mattresses among others
