Our new Faithful Friends Active Minds Kit is now available for loan! 🐶

Celebrating the joy, humour and companionship that dogs bring to our lives, this fun-filled kit includes activities and games designed to encourage turn-taking, planning, problem-solving and social interaction.

As part of the SA Nature Festival, join community artist Alan Shepard for a relaxing, hands-on workshop where you’ll create your own beautiful nature mandala using seeds, leaves and other natural materials. 🍃✨

No artistic experience needed — all materials provided. Suitable for adults. Come along, get creative and take home a little piece of nature. 💚

This week, we take you back to the remarkable story of explorer, surveyor, artist and poet David Landale Beetson.

Born in 1845 in Cuttack, British India, David Beetson arrived in South Australia with his parents in 1850 and was raised at Stradbroke House in Rostrevor. While a student at St Peter’s College, Beetson developed a passion for sketching and poetry - interests that would later accompany him on some remarkable expeditions into the Australian interior.

In 1869-70, Beetson joined George Goyder’s survey party to Darwin, where he remained until 1876. Then, in 1889, he accompanied explorer William Tietkens on the Central Australia Exploring Expedition, undertaking survey work in the Lake Amadeus district.

The expedition documented a number of significant geographical features, including Lake Macdonald (Karrkurutinyja), the Kintore Range, Mount Leisler, Mount Rennie and the Cleland Hills, while also defining the western boundaries of Lake Amadeus. Remarkably, the expedition also produced the first known photographs of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Beetson’s artistic talents were captured in his 1893 publication, Central Australian Exploring Rhymes and Camel-Back Jingles, which brought together his sketches and poetry inspired by his experiences in the Australian interior.

The image featured here is Beetson’s sketch of Laura Vale. According to William Tietkens’ Journal of the Central Australian Exploring Expedition, Tietkens named Laura Vale after David Beetson’s daughter.

It’s a wonderful reminder that Australia’s early exploration was also recorded through art, poetry and personal observation.

Attendees where shown how to perform foundational crochet techniques and were able to put them into practice throughout the session.🧶

There are two advanced beginner crochet classes coming up in September:
