FROM THE ARCHIVES

ANZAC Day is a moment that asks something simple but powerful of us: to pause. In a world that sometimes feels loud with disagreement and division, it reminds us that some things sit above politics. The men and women we honour who served in the past and who serve today stood for a shared sense of duty, sacrifice and protection of others.

ANZAC Day is not about who was right or wrong in history, but about acknowledging courage, loss, and the enduring human cost of conflict. It is about gratitude, reflection, and humility.

This feels especially important now. As the world continues to face uncertainty it becomes not only a tribute to the past, but a quiet reminder and a call for perspective in the present.

In setting aside politics we make space for something more unifying: respect. And in that shared respect, we honour not just history, but the values that should guide us forward.

When you attend the ANZAC Day ceremonies around the Charters Towers district, leave aside your everyday disputes, your fears for the future, and simply remember the past, and acknowledge those who gave their lives and those who returned to live with the burden of the unimaginable.

Lest we forget.
