Yesterday we were discussing the attention economy.

Among the examples was a post from the Mayor asking people not to comment, argue, share, or “give oxygen” to material she considers harmful.

It deserves a closer look.

Because online, oxygen is attention.

Comments are attention.
Arguments are attention.
Shares are attention.
Outrage is attention.

And attention determines what travels.

There is nothing inherently wrong with refusing to amplify something. In many cases, it is sensible.

But it raises a more interesting question:

Who decides what deserves oxygen?

Abuse, threats, attacks on families and coordinated pile-ons are not legitimate scrutiny.

But scrutiny of public officials is not abuse simply because it is uncomfortable.

Those distinctions matter.

Because once attention becomes something that can be granted, withheld or redirected, the argument is no longer only about what is being said.

It is also about who gets heard.

This is what one of its mechanisms looks like up close.

A few bad apples is a reassuring explanation.

A system is a more difficult one.

The NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner says exploitation of vulnerable workers in regional NSW is “not confined to a handful of bad actors” and describes intimidation, ineffective coordination between authorities and a culture of silence.

Gurmesh Singh says exploitation is “not very widespread”, that existing laws are robust, and points to poor enforcement and dodgy operators.

Those are materially different descriptions of the same problem.

So rather than choosing the more convenient one, we want to know:

What evidence tells us whether this is a handful of bad operators, or a system that has allowed bad operators to keep operating?

We’re going to look.

If you’ve worked in the local berry industry, as a worker, grower, contractor, labour hire provider, regulator or advocate, and you know something that helps answer that question, our inbox is open.

If speaking publicly could put you at risk, you do not need to identify yourself in your first message.

Facts first. People first.

The file is open.

The Department has become aware of a consultation process.

If it’s a dead end, Williams Way.
If it’s an endless loop, Cecato Circuit.
If it’s one way to Sydney, Gurmesh Gateway.
If it’s already on the radio, Pre-Determined Lane.

Council will be relieved to learn there are only two options.

We finished Chomsky at an extremely inconvenient time.

There are serious allegations concerning the exploitation of migrant workers on the Coffs Coast.

Somewhere along the way, the argument shifted.

Wait for the facts.
Don’t give it oxygen.
Share it everywhere.

None of these instructions tells us what happened to the workers.

They tell us what to do with our attention.

We are becoming less interested in who wins the argument and more interested in how the argument decides what everyone sees.

Somewhere in all this, the workers disappeared.

We appear to have reached the textiles section.

We spoke to Logistics and Finance. They suggested we workshop it with Marketing.

Marketing has returned with recommendations.

Legal has asked why marketing exists.
