Do you know who runs elections in Tasmania? People sometimes confuse the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), but they are two different organisations with different responsibilities.

🗳️ The TEC runs Tasmania’s local government and state elections, including House of Assembly and Legislative Council elections.
📝 The AEC runs federal elections for the Parliament of Australia and manages Tasmania’s electoral roll, which is the list of people eligible to vote.

📍 Own or occupy land in a local government area but you’re enrolled on the State roll somewhere else?
🏢 Represent a corporate body that owns or occupies land?
You may be eligible to vote in the upcoming local government elections if you're enrolled on a council's General Manager's roll.
To be included, you must complete a General Manager’s roll enrolment form and submit it to the relevant council's General Manager before rolls close at 6pm on Thursday 10 September 2026.

As Operations Manager at the TEC, Sarah provides structure that helps elections run smoothly. From establishing election offices and counting centres, to appointing returning officers, coordinating voting processes and developing election timelines, she works behind the scenes to ensure everything comes together.

Sarah’s election journey began in 2014 as a university student providing IT support at a scrutiny centre. Since then, she's worked in various roles across the organisation and, today, she's responsible for overseeing the operational delivery of major elections across Tasmania.

Local government elections are conducted primarily by post, with teams managing the production, distribution and processing of large volumes of ballot packs. Much of Sarah’s work happens long before voting begins – coordinating staffing and timelines, testing systems and processes, and planning for contingencies to ensure the team is prepared for whatever comes their way.

“The better prepared we are, the more able we are to respond when something unexpected inevitably happens,” Sarah says. “Elections involve a huge number of detailed processes, and part of my role is to ensure everyone understands the importance of getting those details right, in the right order.”

For Sarah, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing her team grow in confidence, take ownership of important responsibilities and work together to deliver an election that gives every elector the opportunity to participate.

“People come together during elections. It’s hard work, often under significant pressure, but everyone understands the importance of what we’re delivering.”

âś… Our returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) are election-ready!

After three days of intensive training and hands-on exercises, our ROs and AROs are prepared to support candidates, councils and voters throughout the 2026 local government elections.

Based in election offices in Cambridge and Invermay, they will take a leading role in the delivery of local government elections across Tasmania.

🗳️ Voting opens on Monday 5 October, when ballot packs start arriving in the post, and closes at 2 pm on Tuesday 27 October 2026.

Local government elections are coming up and voting is compulsory. Now is the time to check your enrolment so you're ready to vote in October.

Ballot packs are delivered by post, so it’s important that your enrolled address is up to date to make sure you receive yours.

🗳We’re getting election-ready!

Local government elections are conducted by postal ballot, with extensive preparation taking place behind the scenes well before candidates are announced and ballot packs are sent to voters.

Data entry operators, under the supervision of election managers, have been testing the systems and processes that support election delivery, helping ensure everything is ready to count your vote.

Using data from previous elections, we test our readiness and identify potential issues. This helps ensure everything is running smoothly before the polling period begins on Monday 5 October 2026.
