Step up for literacy:
Become a 26Ten Champion and help make literacy everyone’s business
26Ten helps connect Tasmanian adults with support to build their reading, writing and everyday maths skills.

We’ve released a new 10-year Strategy and are looking for Champions to help spread the word about what we do.

The new 26Ten Champions Group will promote awareness about 26Ten and the Tasmanian Adult Literacy Strategy, and support local communities by sharing information, meeting people and joining local events.

If you live in Tasmania and know about literacy – or have lived experience of it – please apply to join this volunteer group.

Want to support adults to improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills?

Tas TAFE is offering the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Tutor Skill Set (CHCSS00101), a free online course for Tasmanian residents.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills to help adult learners build their literacy and numeracy skills and achieve their goals.

You'll learn about:
• How adults learn
• Identifying individual learning needs
• Strategies for teaching reading, writing, spelling and numeracy
• Using adaptive technologies to support learning
• Supporting adults on their learning journey

26Ten is pleased to invite you to two professional learning workshops. The first workshop is focused on strengthening our practice when working with adults who have been impacted by trauma. The second workshop introduces the free online training tools developed for both practitioners and learners by Pathways Awarua in New Zealand.

Workshop One
Topic: Working with Adults Impacted by Trauma
Facilitator: Jennifer Leahy, Trainer for New Zealand Institute of Training and Leadership
Date: Tuesday 17 March
Time: 1:00–2:30 pm
Location: Libraries Tasmania Hobart Training Room
This session will explore practical, trauma informed approaches for supporting adult learners, with a focus on creating safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environments. The workshop will be focused on engaging adult learners, based on Jennifer’s real-world experience in adult literacy. Jennifer brings significant experience in adult literacy, trauma-informed practice, and training in the adult education sector.

Workshop Two
Topic: Pathways Awarua: Free online self-directed learning for literacy and numeracy foundation skills
Facilitator: Michale Grawe, Professional Learning Manager from New Zealand
Date: Wednesday 18 March
Time: 9.30-11.30 am
Location: Libraries Tasmania Hobart Training Room
This workshop will introduce the online tools developed for educators and learners to support adult literacy and numeracy development. The online platform is flexible and can be integrated in a range of classroom and workplace contexts as well as supporting self-paced as well as guided learning. Michael is an adult educator applying specialist skills in digital software development for the sector.

Tasmania, here we come! Pathways Awarua workshops with 26Ten - Tasmania's campaign for adult literacy

Next week we’re heading across the Tasman to Tasmania. We’ve been invited by 26TEN to run workshops in Hobart and Circular Head 26Ten - Learn For Life Smithton, and we’re really looking forward to meeting and working with colleagues there.

It’s always a pleasure to connect with people who share a passion for strengthening literacy and numeracy in their communities. During the workshops we’ll be sharing the Pathways Awarua platform and exploring how free, online, self-directed learning can support adult learners, workplaces, and whānau (families) to build skills and confidence.

26TEN is Tasmania’s statewide strategy to improve adult literacy and numeracy. It brings together organisations, educators, workplaces, and communities to support adults to strengthen the reading, writing, maths, and communication skills they need for everyday life and work. The name 26TEN reflects the 26 letters of the alphabet and the 10 digits used in numbers - the fundamental tools people use to participate fully in modern society.

We’re grateful for the invitation and excited to share ideas, learn from others, and be part of the ongoing discussion about supporting adult learners across Tasmania.
