Bushfire Preparedness in Tweed Shire

Join us. The Uki Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) exists within the greater Rural Fire Service (RFS) organisation and
has a long history with many locals dedicating their time and service. The brigade is managed by its volunteer members with an ele

cted executive committee providing
administrative duties. The brigade is led by the Captain who is elected at the Annual General Meeting
and oversees all matters. The brigade reports to the RFS Far North Coast District Office in
Murwillumbah. The Uki area presents urban, rural and wilderness interfaces requiring a need to respond to a diverse
range of fire protection, suppression and other emergencies. As well as fires this can include vehicle
accidents, rescues, flood recovery or hazard reduction burning activities. The brigade also offers
community advice on bushfire planning and preparedness as well as being responsible for issuing fire
permits when required. Volunteering with the NSW RFS offers you the opportunity to learn new and valuable skills that will not
only assist you in your voluntary role but in day to day life. The RFS welcomes the time and expertise
that volunteers can contribute, regardless of member’s previous experience and the time they have
available; and in Uki we pride our brigade on being welcoming, friendly, inclusive and supportive. The RFS offers volunteers certified, nationally accredited firefighter training, which is complemented by
regular Uki RFB training. As well as firefighters the brigade is always looking for people who would like
to get involved in managing financial and membership administration, internal communications,
meetings, record keeping, maintenance. Join us at Uki Fire Station, 34 Mitchell Street, Uki at any of our regular activities:
› Meeting - 1st Monday of the month, 1730hrs
› Maintenance - 2nd Monday of the month, 1730hrs
› Training - 3rd Monday of the month, 1730hrs

Uki Rural Fire Brigade along with other brigades from the Far North Coast have assisted with several deployments to fires in the Northern Rivers area over the last week.

Here are a few shots of some of the Uki crew putting in a successful back burn at Elliot's Road, Myrtle Creek.

As many of you are no doubt already aware - the official Fire Season ended in the Northern Rivers on 31 March 2026. Our volunteers have been out over the past week quietly switching over the fire permit signage across the community (while I've been taking my sweet time to update Facebook!).

Please note that although fire permits are no longer required this does not mean that it’s a free-for-all.

If you’re planning to burn vegetation within the Rural Fire District, you still need to:

Notify neighbours and the RFS at least 24 hours prior
Have appropriate containment in place
Have appropriate firefighting equipment on hand in case the unexpected happens

The easiest way to notify is online:

Or by phone: 1300 632 174

PLEASE do the right thing — it’s not just the law, it also helps prevent our volunteers from giving up work and family time to attend safe (but unnotified) burns.

A couple of our members had a great morning at Mount Warning Preschool recently, helping out with their evacuation drill and chatting about fire safety.

Of course, the real highlight (for everyone involved) was getting up close with the trucks — lights, sirens, hoses, and plenty of big smiles all round. 🚒

It was awesome to see so many keen hands shoot up when we asked who might like to join the brigade one day… we reckon we’ve got a strong intake lined up for training night in about 15 years!

On a more serious note, it’s fantastic to see the preschool taking emergency preparedness seriously, and we’re always happy to support our community in building those skills early.

If any of the grown-ups are keen to get involved a little sooner, we’re always on the lookout for new volunteers — come along to a training night and say g’day.

Five of our members and our Cat 7 recently headed to Glen Innes for the NSW RFS Region North Annual Exercise (REX).

Over the weekend they were put through a huge range of scenarios alongside other crews from across northern NSW (and a few Queenslanders thrown in for good measure).
It was also a great opportunity for some of our crew to step up — with two taking on Strike Team Leader roles and two stepping into Crew Leader positions as they work towards their qualifications (big thanks to Alstonville brigade for lending a great crew to one of our crew-leaders-in-training)

Special shout out to Shane for earning an honorable mention from the Deputy Commissioner.

Also a special shout out to Lachlan who passed up on going to REX to instead travel down to Nymboida for some water rescue training

It was a massive weekend of learning and bonding and, as usual, awesome representation from our little Village Brigade! 💪😉

It’s with mixed feelings that we share that Don Bentley has decided to step down from the Uki Rural Fire Brigade due to a change in personal circumstances.

As Senior Deputy Captain, Don has played a major role in our Brigade over the last few years, both operationally and behind the scenes. He has been a calm presence at incidents, a strong leader in training, and someone you could always rely on no matter what the issue was.

Beyond the rank, Don has been a great mate, and mentor to the rest of the members and we’re incredibly grateful for everything he has contributed — the time, the effort, and the commitment to keeping our community safe and the Brigade running smoothly.

Thanks Don. You’ll always have a seat on our truck and the last Allen's Snake in the pack 😉
