🌊 Big ideas from some of our youngest waterfront users!

What should Ulverstone’s waterfront look like in 20 years?

Grade 5/6 students from West Ulverstone Primary School have been putting their minds to that very question and they’ve come up with some fantastic ideas.

From better connections across the river and improvements to the waterslide, to protecting the skatepark and pump track, adding sporting equipment and celebrating much-loved places like the Dinosaur Park, they’ve given us plenty to think about.

As the first round of engagement for the Ulverstone Waterfront Master Plan gets underway, we’re finding new ways to hear from people who can sometimes be missed in traditional consultation, including children and young people.

Because the waterfront we plan today is the one they’ll inherit.

Some of the best ideas start with a problem that needs solving.

In 1983, boilermaker, welder and farmer Philip Dobson could see that imported agricultural machinery simply wasn't made for north-west Tasmania.

Our rocky ground and heavy clay demanded something tougher.

So, in a shed in Ulverstone, Philip built something better.

The first Dobmac Potato Planter was designed specifically for Tasmanian conditions. It worked, and before long, farmers much further afield took notice.

The Dobmac Planter went international, turning a solution to a Tasmanian problem into a globally recognised piece of agricultural engineering.

More than four decades later, Dobmac remains family-owned, with Philip's son Mark now at the helm. The business has evolved, but its approach remains remarkably familiar: understand what farmers need, find practical solutions and build relationships that last.

When Nicole Viney first stepped into a jewellery studio in 2006, she thought she was heading towards a career in nursing.

Instead, she discovered her calling.

Today, Nicole operates one of Tasmania's most distinctive jewellery businesses from Turner’s Beach, creating bespoke pieces for clients across Tasmania, Australia and beyond.
