Punakha Dzongkhag Administration Punakha Dzongkhag Administration delivers prompt and quality services to the people while pursuing well balanced socio economic development.

Punakha Dzongkhag is situated in western Bhutan bordered by Gasa, Thimphu and Wangduephodrang. The Dzongkhag is located at an altitude ranging from 1100-2500 m above sea level. Until 1955, Punakha served as the winter capital of Bhutan. Currently, it serves as the winter residence for the Central Monastic Body. Punakha Dzongkhag is well known for rice, vegetables and fruits owing to its favorable

location, soil and climatic conditions. Similarly, the principal horticulture crops grown are citrus, persimmon, peach, guava, passion fruits and vegetables. The Dzongkhag is also a popular tourist destination. Punakha Dzong is a major attraction besides Chhimi Lhakhang, and the two hot springs, namely Koma Tshachu and Chhubu Tshachu.

23.05.2026: The official launch of the first-ever Punakha Regenerative Tourism Master Plan during the historic Fertility Festival at Chimi Lhakhang was graciously graced over by Hon'ble Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment (MoICE).
The “Punakha Future Path – Regenerative Tourism Master Plan” reflects a bold and transformative vision aligned with the National Tourism Plan, with strong commitment towards sustainable tourism, rural livelihood enhancement and inclusive economic growth.

The Dzongkhag Administration extends heartfelt gratitude to the Voice for Green Change Partnership (V4GCP) Project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Handicrafts Association of Bhutan (HAB) for the generous support in developing this Master Plan.
We also sincerely acknowledge the dedicated contributions of the Technical Working Group (TWG), DoT, DCDD, DAMC, RSPN, ABTO, RSPP, HRAB, BTFEC, BOC, UNDP Bhutan, Bhutan Life and all partner agencies involved.
