The Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA), represented by Caretaker Chief Executive Officer Mr Khalala A. Mokefane, is part of the Botswana delegation accompanying His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, on a State Visit to the Republic of Angola.

On the sidelines of the visit, the delegation participated in the Angola–Botswana Economic Forum held in Luanda, which brings together government leaders, institutions, investors and private sector stakeholders from both countries to deepen economic ties and advance practical opportunities for investment, trade and business partnerships.

As part of the programme, Mr Mokefane participated as a panelist under the theme “Agriculture – Opportunities for Investment and Trade Collaboration,” contributing to discussions on strengthening regional value chains, improving market access and unlocking partnerships that can accelerate agricultural growth and food security.

The Forum takes place at a strategic moment as Botswana and Angola seek to translate longstanding bilateral relations into expanded economic cooperation. Priority areas identified include agriculture and food security, mining, energy, transport and infrastructure, tourism, and regional connectivity.

CEDA’s participation aligns with its mandate to promote sustainable citizen entrepreneurship by connecting Botswana enterprises to regional markets, investment opportunities and cross-border partnerships. As economic relations between Botswana and Angola deepen, CEDA remains committed to ensuring citizen entrepreneurs are positioned to benefit meaningfully from increased regional trade and investment.

CEDA Caretaker CEO Leads Morupule Charity Cycle Challenge 2026

Mr. Khalala Mokefane, CEDA Caretaker CEO, took on the role of Chief Cyclist at the Morupule CEO’s Charity Cycle Challenge 2026.

The Agency participated in and supported the cycle challenge, held in Morupule, joining over 250 registered cyclist from across Botswana, under the theme Wheels of Hope. The ride also drew local leaders and community members from Palapye and surrounding areas, who came together under one banner to collaborate in their aim of raising funds to support and refurbish the Palapye Hospital.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Water and Human Settlement and Member of Parliament for Palapye Constituency, Honorable Onnetse Ramogapi noted that upgrading the hospital would benefit not only the local population but also people from across the country, as Palapye is central to most destinations.

Delivering the Chief Cyclist address, the CEDA Caretaker CEO Mr. Khalala Mokefane, mentioned that CEDA is honored to have joined Morupule Coal Mine in such an initiative, further applauding them in their spirit charity work. He mentioned that events such as this provide an important reminder that the an organisation’s contribution extends beyond just its core business. Sustainable development is strengthened when institutions use their resources, influence and partnerships to contribute to the wellbeing of the communities in which they operate.

This year’s Morupule CEO’s Charity Cycle Challenge raised funds of just over P2.2 million, exceeding the initial P2 million target.

Preparations for the opening of the Letsema Horticulture Market (LHM) in Francistown continue to gain momentum following a stakeholder engagement that brought together Francistown leadership, the business community, farmers and other key players within the horticulture value chain.

The engagement formed part of CEDA’s ongoing preparations towards establishing the Francistown branch of the Letsema Horticulture Market, building on the existing market operation in Gaborone. At the heart of the discussions were the farmers, the men and women whose production will ultimately drive the success and sustainability of the market.

The engagement provided an important platform to listen, exchange ideas and discuss the opportunities presented by LHM, including market access for locally produced horticultural products, strengthening linkages between farmers and buyers, improving the availability of fresh local produce and supporting the growth of Botswana’s horticulture sector.

For the business community, institutions, retailers, hospitality establishments and other prospective buyers, the Francistown market is expected to provide an additional platform through which quality locally produced fresh produce can be accessed while creating stronger and more sustainable linkages with Botswana’s farmers.

The expansion into Francistown is also significant beyond the city itself. The market is envisaged to serve as an important link for horticultural producers across the northern parts of the country, bringing the market closer to farmers and creating opportunities for increased participation throughout the agricultural value chain.
As preparations continue, CEDA remains committed to working closely with farmers, the Francistown leadership, the business community and other stakeholders to ensure that the market is responsive to the needs of those it is intended to serve.

The countdown is officially on. The Letsema Horticulture Market is scheduled to officially open its doors in Francistown, marking another important milestone in CEDA’s efforts to strengthen market access, support local production and contribute towards Botswana’s food security and economic diversification.

The Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) and Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) yesterday 01st September 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening Citizen Economic Empowerment, Youth Economic Empowerment, Supplier Development, Enterprise Development and Entrepreneurship Development. Signed at CEDA House in Gaborone by CEDA Caretaker Chief Executive Officer, Mr Khalala Mokefane, and Morupule Coal Mine Chief Executive Officer, Mr Edwin Elias, the partnership brings together CEDA’s financing and enterprise development capabilities with MCM’s market opportunities, industry expertise and supply chain.

Through the partnership, the two organisations will work to identify and unlock opportunities for citizen-owned enterprises within the mining value chain and economic diversification sectors, with particular focus on areas such as agribusiness, manufacturing, supplier development and outsourced services. The partnership will also support entrepreneurial and supplier capacitation, alongside appropriate funding solutions for qualifying citizen enterprises. A key initiative envisaged under the MoU is the development of a cluster vegetable farm, aimed at developing young entrepreneurs in primary production and agro-processing while connecting enterprise development to sustainable market opportunities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Mokefane emphasised that the partnership is ultimately about creating sustainable and competitive citizen-owned businesses that can grow beyond individual contracts and customers; progressing from supplying one mine to serving the wider mining sector and, eventually, regional markets. MCM CEO Mr Elias reaffirmed this commitment, noting that the partnership combines CEDA’s business advisory and financial support mandate with MCM’s supply chain and diversification agenda to create meaningful opportunities for citizen enterprises.

The MoU marks another important step towards turning market opportunities into sustainable enterprises, strengthening local productive capacity, creating jobs and increasing citizen participation and ownership across Botswana’s economy.

Together, CEDA and MCM are building stronger citizen enterprises and creating pathways from opportunity to ownership.
