2026 DEER HERD REDUCTION PROGRAM
The MCA Environment Program, in partnership with Parks Canada, is pleased to announce the dates for this year’s Deer Herd Reduction Program on Hill Island in the Thousand Islands.

Dates: December 5-6, 2026

Important Details:
• Must have Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) or have fi***rm registered with both Canadian and U.S. Customs
• Must not have any legal restrictions holding or being around weapons
• Must be a status card holder from Akwesasne
• Participants under the age of 18 may attend as observers only and must be accompanied by an adult.

Note: Hunters who do not have a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and plan to use their red Longhouse ID must obtain a Non-Resident Fi****ms Declaration Form. The form allows fi***rms and am******on to be transported across the border for up to 60 days and costs $25 CAD. It is available at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) station at 501 Tollgate Road E, Cornwall, ON.

📅 Deadline to sign up is Friday, November 27, 2026. Participants will be selected lottery-style and contacted if chosen.

INDIGENOUS WATER GOVERNANCE PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION
Akwesasró:non are welcome to join the MCA Environment Program for a thesis presentation and community discussion hosted by Vladimir Arana, a longtime partner of the Environment Program.

This presentation will explore challenges Indigenous communities face in accessing clean water and having a say in decisions about water. The research looks at Akwesasne and the Quechua community in Peru to better understand these challenges and how indigenous knowledge and community voices can help shape decisions about water.

Attendees will have the opportunity to share their thoughts, experiences, and feedback to help inform the ongoing research.

When: Tuesday, October 13
Where: Native North American Travelling College Boardroom
Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

AKWESASRONON BIOCULTURAL FRAMEWORK INFO SESSION POSTPONED
Please be advised that the Akwesasronon Biocultural Framework Info Session scheduled for tonight, September 29, has been postponed to Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The time and location are still to be determined and will be shared once finalized.

Come learn about the Akwesasronon Biocultural Framework. The framework comes from a gap within the Remedial Action Plan, which sought to address the history of environmental violence in and around Akwesasne. Akwesasronon voices are needed to empower it!

EVERY BIN COUNTS — RECYCLE IT RIGHT
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s curbside recycling collection accepts a variety of everyday items, giving community members more ways to recycle, reduce waste and keep materials out of the landfill.

Some of the items you can include in your recycling bin are:
♻️ Frozen juice & ice cream containers
♻️ Black plastic food containers
♻️ Empty toothpaste tubes
♻️ Empty roll-on deodorant bottles
♻️ Coffee cups

Please make sure all containers are empty and free of leftover food or residue before placing them in your recycling bin.

Pick-Up Schedule:

ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM WATERFOWL HARVESTING NOTICE
The MCA Environment Program is notifying the community that program personnel will be harvesting waterfowl (geese and ducks) for the Wildlife Consumption & Contaminant Study under the St. Lawrence River Area of Concern Remedial Action Plan.

Harvesting will take place in the marshy areas between St. Regis Island and Hopkins Point. Sampling is expected to begin September 11, 2026, and end by October 3, 2026.
