🤍 Remembering Kessy 🤍

We are heartbroken to share that our beloved American Kestrel, Kessy, has passed away.

Kessy hatched with us on Mother’s Day in 2014- what a wonderful surprise it was to discover that such a tiny baby had joined our flock!! Though Kessy was one of our smallest birds, weighing just over 100 g, she had the biggest personality, and it was hard not to fall in love with her. 🥹

Kessy inspired thousands of people throughout her life, and we know many of you will be just as sad to hear this news. We are so grateful that we got to share 12.5 wonderful years with her 🤍 We encourage anyone who met Kessy to share a memory or a photo of her in the comments to show just how loved she truly was!!

Thank you to everyone who loved Kessy over the years. She was and will always be such a special part of The Raptors team. 🤍

Take off! ✈️

Fraction, a Gyr Falcon, taking off for a morning flight! Often before our falcons fly, we see them do a specific pre-flight routine. They will rouse (shaking out their feathers- happened right before the video began!), observe their surroundings, lighten the load (p**p!) then they’re ready to go! Birds want to be as light and as energetically conscious as possible, and these pre flight behaviours help with that! ✨

We are seeing peak numbers this week for the Turkey Vulture migration in Sooke! ☀️

The photo at the end of the video (provided by RPBO’s Dan Donnecke) shows around 800 TUVUs which were part of a larger group of 1600 counted! For the next two weeks large numbers of TUVUs will attempt the risky and energetically costly crossing of the Jaun de Fuca Strait. A dedicated team of volunteers is on the beach at East Sooke Regional Park observing crossing events so that we can try to determine what weather conditions the TUVUs rely on to safely make it to the Washington coast. If you are down on the beach feel free to strike up a conversation with the volunteers, ask questions, and have a look through the scope to witness this amazing spectacle!
