Building accessible isn't just a smart choice for your future. It's also more cost-effective.

According to new data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), 75% of accessibility features cost less than $500 to include during construction, and the total additional cost for building a fully accessible home was just 6-12% of standard construction costs

They also found that retrofitting your home for accessibility later costs 10x more. The takeaway? Building accessible isn't significantly more expensive. Not building accessible is.

As we close out our series, we want to highlight some excellent local spots that have made accessibility a priority.

What are some other local accessible spots that should be on our radar? Let’s share and uplift these businesses! 🙌

Just like we should be building homes with basic accessibility features, we should do the same for playgrounds so that all children, regardless of ability, can play and interact together.

We are thrilled to see more accessible playgrounds being introduced across Alberta. For , here are some of our favourites in Edmonton and area.

Willow Park School

We especially appreciate Clareview Playground, which features double-wide ramps through the main structure, an accessible sway fun rocker, and one of the few ground-level merry-go-rounds in Edmonton.

Are we missing any? How has your family benefited from accessible playgrounds? Please share! 👇

Here is testing out the kitchen in one of our accessible backyard suites in Spruce Grove!

This week is , a time to celebrate progress toward a more inclusive Canada—and to reflect on the work still to be done.

Accessible homes shouldn’t just be for people with mobility challenges. Having thoughtful design elements like lowered countertops and barrier-free sinks makes a home more inclusive for all ages and abilities.

Advocating for these basic accessibility features in the homes we build is important and starts with us! Look around your home and ask yourself: “Could everyone visit and feel welcome?”

National AccessAbility Week is a time to celebrate accessibility and inclusion and to recognize the contributions of Canadians with disabilities. We believe the first place inclusivity starts is in the homes we build within our communities.
