According to a study by the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, 65% of migrant workers surveyed knew a victim of human trafficking in Canada.

That's not just a statistic. That's a friend, a family member, a coworker, or a neighbour who has experienced trafficking. Human trafficking is not just a distant issue. It is happening in communities across Canada.

Many migrant workers face barriers that can leave them more vulnerable to exploitation and human trafficking. Learning how trafficking happens, who is most at risk, and what warning signs to look for can help prevent exploitation before it occurs.

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. According to Statistics Canada, 11% of Canadians lived in poverty in 2024. Poverty can create conditions that increase vulnerability to exploitation, including human trafficking. Individuals facing financial hardship may have fewer employment options, limited access to support systems, or face increased pressure to accept risky opportunities.

While victims of human trafficking can come from any socioeconomic background, traffickers often identify and exploit existing vulnerabilities such as poverty, social isolation, precarious housing, and barriers to employment.

Reducing vulnerability to trafficking means working toward communities where everyone has access to safety, stability, and opportunity. Every person deserves fair wages, safe working conditions, and the ability to meet their basic needs without fear of exploitation.

We're competing in the Field Law Community Fund Program, which awards funding to projects making a difference in communities across Alberta and the NWT.

Many of the survivors we support have been exploited in employment contexts, including being charged illegal fees for Labour Market Impact Assessments, costs that should never have been theirs to bear. Without legal support, many are unable to pursue civil remedies, recover stolen wages, or hold exploiters accountable.

With your support, this funding could help make trauma-informed, barrier-free legal assistance available to survivors of human trafficking across Alberta. Voting takes less than a minute. No account creation or email address is required!

While it's true that anyone can be a victim of labour trafficking, migrant workers often face unique vulnerabilities that can increase their risk of exploitation. Precarious immigration status, isolation from friends, family, and support systems, language barriers, and fear of retaliation can make it difficult for migrant workers to seek support or report unsafe working conditions.

ACT provides front-line services to victims and survivors of both labour and s*x trafficking. If you or someone you know is experiencing trafficking or exploitation, call ACT at 780-474-1104 or contact the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-833-900-1010. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Today is World Mental Health Day. This year's theme highlights the importance of meaningfully engaging people with lived experience in shaping the policies, services, and decisions that affect their lives.

Lived experience is what someone has experienced themselves. Those with lived experience of mental health challenges have valuable knowledge, insight, and expertise. When their voices are not only heard but included in decision-making, we create more responsive, person-centred systems of care.

We also recognize the connection between mental health and vulnerability. Mental health challenges, trauma, isolation, and barriers to support can increase a person's risk of exploitation, including human trafficking.

By reducing stigma, improving access to support, and centring lived experience, we can help build safer, healthier communities for everyone.

Today, on the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), we hold space for the lives lost and for the families still searching for answers.

Behind every statistic is a daughter, a sister, an auntie, a mother, a friend. Between 2001 and 2015, Indigenous women were nearly six times more likely to be victims of homicide than non-Indigenous women (Statistics Canada). This violence is rooted in systemic discrimination, colonialism, and inequity, and its impacts continue to be felt by Indigenous families and communities across Canada.

We remember those who were taken too soon. We stand with Survivors, families, and communities as they call for justice and lasting change.

What you can do, today and beyond:
🧑 Join a Sisters in Spirit vigil, in person or online
🧑 Share resources and amplify Indigenous voices
🧑 Read the MMIWG Final Report: www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/final-report/
