📱 PHONE SCAMS ARE ON THE RISE
Hamilton Police are warning residents about a telecommunications scam that is costing victims thousands of dollars and leaving them responsible for devices they no longer have.
In the last week, Hamilton Police have received 10 reports, with some incidents involving multiple devices. Victims are typically losing $1,200 to $1,500, roughly the cost of a new smartphone.
In one recent incident, a victim purchased seven phones, which were ultimately diverted to an unknown suspect.
How does it work?
Scammers pose as representatives from telecommunications companies and convince victims to purchase or upgrade a device through their legitimate account. Once the device arrives, the victim is directed to “return” it using instructions provided by the scammer. The device is then intercepted or sent directly to the fraudster.
⚠️ Protect yourself:
• Be cautious of unsolicited calls offering phone upgrades or account changes.
• Hang up and contact your provider directly using a verified phone number.
• Don’t trust caller ID. Scammers can make calls appear legitimate.
• Never hand a device to an unverified courier or ship it to a PO Box without confirming the return directly with your provider.
Stop. Verify. Protect yourself.
