Our pre-employment trades students are all smiles in the shop this week!

These six high school students are happy to be spending this semester at Northern Lakes College, learning the trade of their choice. Participants are enrolled in the pre-employment program for either electrical, pipe trades or welding, and after successful completion will be eligible to challenge the First Period Apprenticeship exam.

There are still seats available in the Industrial Mechanic (millwright) program in High Prairie scheduled for semester two. If you are interested in this, or another trade for next school year, contact the Career Coaching team at [email protected].

As 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 approaches, today we're celebrating 𝐌𝐫𝐬. 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬, Learning Commons Technician at EW Pratt High School!

Kristy tells us that the E.W. Pratt Learning Commons is a multi-use space that offers something for everyone! With a diverse collection of fiction for students to enjoy, digital resources, collaborative workspaces, and quiet study areas, the Learning Commons supports both learning and leisure.

Students have access to a wide variety of resources, from school supplies and educational essentials to board games, cards, and puzzles. Chess is a particular favourite!

The Learning Commons also hosts monthly trivia and interactive games during the lunch break, bringing students together for some friendly competition and fun.

Three members of High Prairie School Division's Indigenous Education (IE) team attended the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐩𝐢𝐦ā𝐜ī𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭ā𝐧 𝐧ē𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐰ē𝐰𝐢𝐧 (𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, held September 28 and 29 at Dakota Dunes Resort on traditional Whitecap Dakota Nation Territory in Saskatchewan.

Organized by YXE Cree Speakers Society: Keep Our Language Alive, the two-day conference brought together Elders, Knowledge Keepers, educators, language advocates, and community leaders to explore Indigenous language revitalization, education, and the importance of preserving languages for future generations.

During the residential school era, it was forbidden for Indigenous children to speak their languages as part of a deliberate effort to sever family and cultural ties and extinguish Indigenous culture. The survival of these languages is a testament to the strength and resilience of generations who held their languages close and continued to pass them on despite efforts to silence them.

The urgency of language revitalization is recognized internationally through the United Nations' International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032), which calls for meaningful action to preserve, revitalize, and strengthen Indigenous languages. In Canada, the Indigenous Languages Act supports these efforts, recognizing the importance of reclaiming languages and ensuring they continue to be spoken and passed down to future generations.

For High Prairie School Division's Indigenous Education team, this work includes supporting educators in finding meaningful ways to incorporate Indigenous languages into student learning.

In the words of the late grandson of conference co-emcee Ira Horse, “Our language is not dead; it's not lost. It's sleeping, and we need to wake it up.”

School-based occupational therapy helps students develop the skills they need to participate successfully in their school environment, with a focus on access, participation, and independence.

Within High Prairie School Division, our Occupational Therapist works as a consultant alongside students and their educational teams, providing support in areas such as:

🔹 Assessment and identifying areas where students may need support
🔹 Self-care skills, including feeding, dressing, and toileting
🔹 Sensory processing and navigating busy school environments
🔹 Emotional regulation and activity levels
🔹 Executive functioning skills, such as attention and organization
🔹 Fine and gross motor skills, from handwriting and using scissors to playground activities
🔹 Visual perceptual skills that support reading, writing, movement, and problem solving
🔹 Social and play skills
🔹 Classroom routines and expectations, including strategies such as visual schedules and sensory tools

The goal of school-based OT is to help students participate fully in learning, develop greater independence, and build confidence and self-regulation.

This October, we recognize the important role occupational therapy plays in helping students access and participate in their school day. 🩷
