🔥 Fire Prevention Week 2026

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we want to thank our Revelstoke community for engaging with this year’s theme: lithium‑ion battery safety. These powerful batteries are part of our everyday lives — in phones, tools, toys, e‑bikes, and more — and when handled properly, they’re safe. When damaged, overheated, or misused, they can become a serious fire risk.

This week we highlighted simple habits that make a big difference:
• Using only high quality certified chargers
• Keeping devices off soft surfaces while charging
• Looking for signs of battery damage
• Store batteries at room temperature and out of reach of kids and pets
• Disposing of them safely through proper municipal programs

Your awareness and actions help prevent fires before they start. Thank you for taking battery safety seriously and helping keep Revelstoke safe.

Stay charged. Stay safe.

🔋🔥 Lithium‑Ion Battery Safety Starts at Home
Lithium‑ion batteries power our phones, tools, bikes, and gadgets — but when damaged or misused, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

✅ DO:

Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer
Charge on a hard, non‑combustible surface
Inspect batteries for swelling, leaks, or damage
Recycle old or damaged batteries at approved drop‑off sites

❌ DON’T:

Leave batteries charging overnight
Use swollen or cracked batteries
Charge near bedding, furniture, or paper
Throw batteries in the garbage or blue bin

If a battery smokes or catches fire — move away, don't breath the smoke, call 911, and alert others.

Simple precautions keep your home, family, and our community safe.

🔥🚛 Batteries Don’t Belong in the Garbage — Here’s Why
A single damaged battery tossed into household garbage can ignite inside a collection truck or at a transfer station. These fires grow fast, produce toxic smoke, and put workers, first responders, and our community at risk.

Keep Revelstoke safe — dispose of batteries the right way:

Never throw any battery in the garbage or recycling
Store used batteries in a cool, dry place until disposal
Tape the terminals on lithium‑ion and 9‑volt batteries
Take batteries to a designated drop‑off location in Revelstoke
Safe disposal prevents dangerous fires before they start.

🔋🔥 Rechargeable Batteries: Small Size, Big Power
Rechargeable batteries pack a lot of energy into a small space. If they’re damaged or charged unsafely, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.

Safe charging is simple:

Use the correct charger
Charge on a hard, flat surface
Unplug devices as soon as they’re done
Keep batteries away from anything that can burn

Everyday charging habits make a real difference in preventing lithium‑ion battery fires here in Revelstoke.

Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services would like to extend a sincere thank you to Home Hardware Revelstoke for their generous and continued support of our training program.

Materials that might otherwise be considered waste, surplus, or seconds are given a second life at our Fire Training Centre, where they provide our firefighters with valuable hands-on training opportunities. These donations help our members continually improve the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to better serve our community.

A special thank you to the local manager Sarah Deschamps and Byron, who have been instrumental in building this relationship and supporting our training needs. Your generosity and willingness to work with our department are truly appreciated.

Strong community partnerships help make strong fire departments. 🚒 🔥 🚒

Thank you, Home Hardware Revelstoke, for supporting our fire department and our community!
