The Churchill River is significant to Northern Manitoba for both historical and ecological reasons.

For one, the river’s mouth was a strategic location for the Hudson’s Bay Company to build Prince of Wales Fort to operate as a trading post, and base for exploration, whaling and searching for precious metals.

Additionally, the Churchill River estuary is also home to thousands of beluga whales each summer as they migrate from their wintering grounds.

If you’re lucky, you can experience these curious creatures when crossing the river to visit the fort.

Tuesday, September 8, is the last day to request the information package in advance of the mandatory site visit on September 9. ⚠️

The closing date is Oct. 5, 2026 at 2:59 pm Central Daylight Time.

On World Shorebirds Day, we’re looking at Motus towers in Wapusk National Park and at York Factory National Historic Site. More than 2,400 Motus stations stand in 34 countries, tracking not only birds, but bats and insects as well.

The Wapusk and York Factory towers have detected the short-billed dowitcher, semipalmated plover, ruddy turnstone, Hudsonian whimbrel, red knot, stilt sandpiper, Canada goose, common tern, eastern whip-poor-will, brown-headed cowbird, semipalmated sandpiper, sanderling, American robin, least sandpiper, Bicknell’s thrush, black-throated blue warbler, and eastern red bat.
