Did you know? In 1915, a major scandal involving the construction of Manitoba’s Legislative Building led to the Mathers Inquiry, which found that a lack of auditor independence contributed to fraud. This prompted reforms to strengthen the Provincial Auditor’s autonomy—an important step in the evolution of public sector oversight in Manitoba.

Today, the Auditor General is an independent office of the Legislative Assembly.

We were honoured to attend a celebration last night hosted by Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville, marking 150 years since the appointment of Manitoba’s first provincial auditor. In addition to Auditor General Tyson Shtykalo, former AGs Norm Ricard, Jon Singleton, and Carol Bellringer were also in attendance.
