In light of Berlin’s Internationalist Q***r Pride coming up on July 25th we want to invite you for a screening of the documentary film “Because of You: A History of Kilawin Kolektibo” accompanied by a message from the film’s creators Desireena Almoradie and Barbara Malaran.

To be able to compare what q***r Filipinx community looked like overseas in the 90’s to what it looks like in the Philippines today we also have a short imput from The Sunny Club , a Manila-based collective for q***r women and from Bahagari , the national alliance of LGBTQIA+ advocates, organizations and formations in the Philippines. Afterwards there will be time for discussion and exchange.

LGBTQIA+ liberation is inseparable from the liberation of the Filipino people🌈✊🏽

About the film:

This archival documentary traces the history of Kilawin Kolektibo, a pioneering collective of q***r Filipinxs who came together in NYC in the mid-nineties. Coined by the group’s founding members, the phrase Kilawin Kolektibo combines the name of a raw, spicy Filipino ceviche (Kilawin) with a portmanteau of collective (Kolektib) and a slang word for le***an in Tagalog (tibo).

Having experienced marginalization in Filipino culture because of their q***r identity and in mainstream gay culture because of their race, language, and gender, the individuals who made up Kilawin Kolektibo aimed to create a space that would celebrate both their q***rness and their Filipinx culture. The members of the group sought political empowerment and increased visibility, but above all, they sought to create a space of friendship and safety for those who found themselves suspended between cultures and identities.

“The resumption of Free Trade Agreement negotiations should not proceed as though the human rights crisis in the Philippines does not exist,” said Sol Taule, deputy secretary general of human rights group Karapatan.

In a related development, more than 20 European civil society organizations expressed serious concern that the European Union’s drive to secure access to critical raw materials and expand market access is increasingly taking precedence over human rights, environmental integrity, climate objectives, the rule of law, and the protection of affected communities.

TOMORROW!! Come stay cold with us in the Air Conditioning at bUm Berlin for the Filipinx Fiesta!

Community Zine-Making Workshop 📍 Starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Café

What’s it like to grow up between two cultures?

In this workshop, we’ll work together to create a safe space where personal experiences, memories, and stories can come to life. Using collage, drawing, and text, you’ll design your own zine page and become part of a collaborative community zine.

It’s not about what’s “right” or “perfect,” but about expression, sharing, and storytelling together. Your story can be exactly as you feel it.

All the pages created will then be printed in a colorful risograph zine and mailed to all participants after the workshop, so that everyone receives their own copy of the collaborative project.

The workshop is an open, safe space for community, connection, and empowerment through sharing personal stories.

No registration required—just drop by.
Materials will be provided.
