FIJI MOVES HORIZON 2030 FROM VISION TO ACTION

Fiji is moving from vision to action in transforming its food systems, with Government calling for stronger partnerships and targeted investment to deliver the priorities of Horizon 2030.

Opening the Round Table Discussion on Horizon 2030 and the National Agrifood Investment Plan at the Novotel Conference Centre in Lami today, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna said the focus must now shift from identifying challenges to financing and implementing solutions.

“Today, our task is to take that ambition one step further – from vision to investment, and from investment to implementation and results,” Hon. Tunabuna said.

He reiterated the Government’s core message that “Food and Nutrition Security is national security,” stressing the need to increase domestic food production, improve market access and productivity, strengthen infrastructure and build greater resilience to climate change and natural disasters.

The Minister said the Short-Term Investment Plan provides a clear starting point, identifying 26 priority interventions requiring FJD26.5 million, including approximately FJD15.9 million expected from external development, climate and private-sector financing.

“Our challenge is to determine who will do what, who will invest, how we will coordinate, and how we will measure success,” he said.

Hon. Tunabuna called on development partners, financial institutions and the private sector to recognise agrifood as a serious economic investment opportunity, spanning production, processing, cold chains, logistics, digital agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism.

He also emphasised that investment must reach the people at the heart of Fiji’s food system – farmers, fishers, women, youth and rural and maritime communities.

“Horizon 2030 gives us the direction. The National Agrifood Investment Plan gives us the investment framework. Our responsibility now is to deliver,” he said.

The round table brings together Government, development partners, private sector representatives, farmers, fishers and other stakeholders to identify priority investments, address bottlenecks and agree on practical actions to accelerate Fiji’s food systems transformation.

FIJI LAUNCHES HORIZON 2030 NATIONAL FOOD SYSTEMS PATHWAY

Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Service, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Honourable Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, today officially launched three key national instruments aimed at strengthening Fiji’s food and nutrition security and building a resilient, sustainable and innovative food system.

The three instruments are Horizon 2030: Fiji’s National Food Systems Pathway, the Fiji Food Systems Investment Plan Framework, and the Short-Term Investment Plan.

Speaking at the launch at the Novotel Hotel in Lami this morning, the Prime Minister described the occasion as more than the launch of policy documents, emphasising that it represents a “concrete, fully costed programme of national action” towards a safe, resilient and sustainable food system for every Fijian.

“Food and nutrition security is national security.”

Adding that food security is about ensuring food is on the table for every family, improving the health and nutrition of children, creating dignified livelihoods for rural and maritime communities, and strengthening Fiji’s resilience to cyclones, floods, droughts and global market disruptions.

Hon. Rabuka stressed that Fiji’s food system extends from farms and oceans to transport, storage, processing, markets, tourism, health, education, finance, technology and research.

“No Ministry, no industry, and no community can deliver this transformation alone. We need a genuine whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.”

Government’s policy commitment, he said, is to produce safer, healthy and nutritious food locally, reduce excessive dependence on imported processed foods, strengthen local supply chains, add value to Fijian products and create reliable markets for farmers, fishers and forest-based enterprises.

The Prime Minister also encouraged families, schools and communities to establish home gardens, highlighting their role in improving nutrition, reducing household costs and strengthening community resilience.

Horizon 2030 is built around 12 interconnected game-changing solutions, covering areas such as nutritious local food, value addition, market access, climate resilience, finance, digital technology, women and youth empowerment, research and innovation, sustainable land management and institutional capacity.

A major focus of the framework is closing the gap between policy and implementation.

“Horizon 2030 tells us where we are going. The Investment Plan Framework identifies how Government, development partners, climate financiers, and the private sector can work together. And the Short-Term Investment Plan tells us what immediate actions are required and what they will cost.”

The Short-Term Investment Plan identifies 26 priority interventions requiring FJD 26.5 million, with approximately FJD 15.9 million expected to be mobilised from external development, climate and private-sector financing sources.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, and the European Union in developing and supporting implementation of the framework.

He called on development partners, the private sector, Government agencies, farmers, fishers, foresters and communities to work together to turn the pathway into tangible results.

“Implementation must now become our primary measure of success," added the Prime Minister.

The launch of Horizon 2030 marks more than a new chapter in Fiji’s food systems journey—it marks a commitment to action. It is a commitment to ensure that every Fijian has access to safe, nutritious and affordable food; that farmers, fishers and rural communities have stronger livelihoods; and that Fiji’s land, forests and oceans are protected for generations to come.

NATIONAL AGRICULTURE SHOW 2026 OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

The Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, today officially launched the 2026 National Agriculture Show, setting the stage for Fiji’s flagship agricultural event to be held at Subrail Park, Labasa, from 15 to 17 September 2026.

The three-day event will be held under the theme, “Green Growth: Golden Gains – Advancing Agriculture through Innovation, Diversification, Value Addition for a Resilient and Prosperous Fiji.”

Speaking at the launch at the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways Conference Room in Raiwaqa, Hon. Tunabuna said the National Agriculture Show provided an important platform to celebrate Fiji’s farmers while showcasing the innovation, diversity and potential of the agriculture sector.

“The National Agriculture Show remains Fiji’s flagship agricultural event, bringing together farmers, agribusinesses, researchers, development partners, educational institutions, youth, women, entrepreneurs and the wider community,” Hon. Tunabuna said.

He said hosting the Show in the Northern Division reflected the significant contribution Vanua Levu continues to make to Fiji’s agricultural development.

“It provides an opportunity to showcase the rich agricultural diversity and potential of the North, while bringing together exhibitors and visitors from across the country,” he said.

Hon. Tunabuna said the theme for this year’s Show reflected Government’s vision of building a modern, productive, resilient and environmentally sustainable agriculture sector.

He highlighted the importance of innovation, diversification and value addition in increasing productivity, strengthening food security, creating employment and expanding economic opportunities for Fijians.

“As a Government, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting our farmers through investments in mechanisation, research and innovation, climate-smart agriculture, improved infrastructure, market access and strategic partnerships,” he said.

The Minister said visitors to the National Agriculture Show can expect an exciting programme featuring agricultural exhibitions, competitions, educational displays, live demonstrations, agribusiness networking opportunities and family-friendly activities.

A key attraction will be the Agriculture-Themed Park, which will offer interactive, hands-on learning experiences for visitors of all ages. The park will showcase Fiji’s crops and livestock, modern farming technologies, innovative agricultural practices and value-added products.

Hon. Tunabuna said the Show would also provide families, students and aspiring farmers with an opportunity to experience first-hand the changing face of Fiji’s agriculture sector.

The 2026 National Agriculture Show will also host Fiji’s National Coconut Day Celebration, highlighting the importance of the coconut industry and recognising the contribution of coconut farmers, processors and other stakeholders.

The celebration will showcase innovative coconut products, value-added opportunities, and new technologies, while highlighting the coconut industry's contribution to rural livelihoods, food and nutrition security, employment, and economic development.

He described the coconut as the “Tree of Life”, saying the celebration would reaffirm the commitment to revitalising and growing Fiji’s coconut industry for future generations.

The Minister also acknowledged the contribution of sponsors, development partners and other stakeholders whose support is helping make the National Agriculture Show possible.

He encouraged farmers, schools, youth groups, women’s organisations, agribusinesses, government agencies, development partners and members of the public to participate fully in the three-day event.

“I invite every Fijian to mark the dates in your calendar and join us in Labasa as we celebrate the resilience, dedication and achievements of our farmers and celebrate our rich agricultural heritage through the National Agriculture Show,” Hon. Tunabuna said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways will continue working with stakeholders in the coming weeks to ensure the 2026 National Agriculture Show provides three days of learning, innovation, business opportunities and celebration of Fiji’s agriculture sector.

GINGER FARMING TRAINING EMPOWERS FARMERS IN THE TIKINA OF NADI, BUA

A two-day intensive training workshop on ginger cultivation recently concluded at Sawani Village in the Tikina of Nadi in Bua, equipping 27 local male and female farmers from five neighboring communities with essential knowledge and practical skills to boost high-value crop production in the division.

The training brought together farmers from Nasolo, Nasavu, Nasawana, Sawani, and Saolo, focusing on modern ginger husbandry practices aimed at improving yield quality, farm management, and economic resilience for rural agricultural households.

Participants received instruction on crop management, soil health, land preparation, pest and disease control, and optimal harvesting techniques tailored to local soil conditions.

Hands-on Practical Demonstrations were also conducted during the field sessions, allowing farmers to practice key land preparation, planting, and maintenance techniques directly in the field.

The program successfully engaged both male and female farmers, highlighting the vital role of women in agriculture and community development across Bua Province.

The workshop was facilitated by agriculture officers from the Central Division in collaboration with dedicated staff from Bua Province, bringing established ginger farming expertise directly to the Northern Division.

Ginger continues to be a high-potential commodity crop in Fiji, offering significant commercial opportunities for local growers.

By building technical capacity directly within rural communities, this joint initiative ensures farmers in Sawani and surrounding villages are well-positioned to adopt best practices, improve farm sustainability, and diversify their livelihoods.

Agriculture Technical Officer (Namosi), Ms Asenaca Vaga, and Agriculture Assistant, Dawasamu, Ilaisa Gonebure, facilitators of the training, praised the high level of engagement from participants, noting that the combination of classroom-style husbandry instruction and practical field demonstrations equips the farmers to immediately apply their new skills on their respective farms.
