This will be an excellent panel discussion as part of the Festival. Taking place at 12pm on Saturday, it's FREE to attend.

We’ve been working behind the scenes with the fantastic team at Women in Boatbuilding (WiBB) and the Britannia Sailing Trust to bring you a special panel discussion exploring the challenges and opportunities facing the traditional boatbuilding industry today.

Hosted by Obioma Oji from WiBB, the discussion will feature women involved in the restoration of Britannia, the last functional example of an East Coast Smack, originally built in 1915 and currently being lovingly restored on Exeter Quay.

The panel will explore three key themes:

🌳 From Forest to Futtock: Restoring the β€˜Trees to Sea’ Link
How can we reconnect forestry and boatbuilding? Discover how projects such as the Britannia Wood Project are helping secure sustainably sourced timber for the future of wooden vessel construction.

πŸ”¨ The Skill Gap: From the Classroom to the Boatyard
What happens after training? We’ll discuss the challenges of moving from education into employment, retaining skilled craftspeople, and ensuring traditional shipwright skills continue to thrive.

βš“οΈ Women at the Helm: Modernising Traditional Trades
A closer look at the WiBB mission, exploring the barriers women face in the industryβ€”from PPE and workplace culture to creating more inclusive and accessible pathways into maritime trades.

πŸ“ Location: Co-create, Exeter
πŸ“… Date: 20th June
⏰ Time: 12pm

Whether you’re interested in maritime heritage, traditional crafts, sustainability, skills development, or supporting women in industry, we’d love to see you there.

Art Work Exeter are inviting people from the Exeter community to take part in A Cut Up Cabaret, an event taking place at Exeter Custom House on the evening of Saturday 27th June as part of The Considerate Society.

Drawing inspiration from Zurich Dada’s Cabaret Voltaire and KrakΓ³w’s Zielony Balonik (Green Balloon), it will be an experimental cabaret salon event that considers the relationship between international shippage and linguistic slippage. Expect music, moments of experimental performance, lots of conversation and the chance to join in yourself.

We are inviting people to plunder, break apart, reconfigure and perform texts relating to the Custom House and Exeter’s historic trade to make your own short performance actions to share as part of the event.

We are looking for those who would like to devise and perform short actions, poetry, songs, puppetry – anything related to the theme, up to 5 minutes long.

The workshop will run in two sessions 10.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm. We would love people to stay for the whole day, but if you can only come for half of the day, please come in the morning.

We will provide tea, coffee and biscuits. If you are staying for the whole day please bring lunch with you.

Please book on via our website/ linktree

Would you like to take part but can’t attend the workshop? Please email us at [email protected] for further info.

We will also be holding an extra β€˜rehearsal’ moment on the 27th June – the day of the event – for anyone that would like it.

Find out more about The Considerate Society and ways to get involved, on our website: https://artworkexeter.org.uk/the-considerate-society/
