Celebrating Pharmacy Technician Day! 💊

Today we celebrate the vital contribution of our skilled pharmacy technicians who play an essential role in patient care.

The work of a pharmacy technicians is incredibly varied – including medicine procurement and supply, governance, clinical trials and dispensing chemotherapy treatments.

On wards, pharmacy technicians are a valued and essential part of our team, reviewing patients’ medication histories and identifying and resolving any issues to help ensure patients have the medicines they need.

Today is a great opportunity to recognise the knowledge, skills, dedication and professionalism pharmacy technicians bring to hospital pharmacy every single day.

A Kettering family has thanked our Play Specialist Coordinator Claire Green who worked closely with them to prepare their autistic son for surgery. 💙

Calling her ‘an absolute angel’, Claire tailored Dylan’s care by:

• Creating a personalised visual guide
• Arranging for him to see medical equipment in advance
• Sharing his communication, sensory and emotional needs with the wider team
• Providing regular family updates
• Allowing him time to process information while in hospital

As a result, the family said Dylan felt calmer and more in control - and they felt listened to and supported.

They went on to nominate Claire for a UHN Star Award which she received for her outstanding patient-centred care. Congratulations, Claire! ⭐

Congratulations to Ethan from the Emergency Department at Northampton General Hospital. Ethan has been recognised for his work to improve care and experiences for patients.

Working with teams across the Emergency Department, Ethan has helped introduce new assessment units and improve how space and staffing are used to support patients through the department more effectively. These changes are helping to reduce ambulance waits, enable quicker treatment or admission, and create a safer, less crowded environment for patients and colleagues.

Ethan said: We strive to improve the patient experience as a team. It’s about how can we positively impact patient care and experience. As a department, we’ve massive strides…it’s been an absolute pleasure. The team have done an amazing job”.

Ethan received his award from Becky Taylor, UHN Director of Continuous Improvement, in recognition of his creative and courageous leadership and the positive difference he and the team continue to make for patients.

Jamie, a consultant in Northampton General Hospital’s Emergency Department, has been recognised for his commitment to helping colleagues learn, develop and deliver the best possible care for patients.

His support helps doctors build their knowledge, confidence and clinical skills, creating a positive learning culture across the Emergency Department.

For patients, this means being cared for by a team that continues to learn, share good practice and strengthen the skills needed to provide safe, high-quality care.

Presenting the award, UHN Director of Continuous Improvement Becky Taylor said:

“He’s done a brilliant job to ensure our resident doctors and locally employed doctors in our ED have the training support and development they need. It’s brilliant to see he’s supporting colleagues across UHN to have a good experience at work and also developing their careers”

Those are the words of Susan Royse, a Cardiology Nurse Specialist who found herself on the other side of care after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Susan trusted her instincts when something didn’t feel right. Now, as she receives treatment across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, she is sharing her story to encourage others to do the same.
Know what is normal for you. Attend screening when invited. If something changes, seek medical advice. Know. Notice. Act.

Today is Allied Health Professions (AHP) Day, a chance to celebrate the people making a difference across health and care every day.

AHPs make up the third largest clinical workforce in the NHS. Whether you are considering a career as an Allied Health Professional or simply want to learn more, today is the perfect opportunity to discover the range of roles available and the impact they have.

Professor Ganesh Baliah, UHN Director of Allied Health Professions, said:

A final moment of comfort for a patient and his family leads to a Star Award for one of our nurses.

A patient nearing the end of his life was able to spend his final moments with his beloved dog by his side, bringing comfort to him and his family at an incredibly difficult time.

When his relatives asked if the patient’s dog could visit for one final time, Harrowden A Ward nurse Princess understood how much this would mean. She worked with the site team to move the patient to a side room, creating a private and safe space for them to be together.

Princess’s compassion gave the patient and his loved ones a meaningful final memory, with his much-loved companion close by.

We are celebrating our latest Star Award winners - NGH's Antenatal and Newborn Screening team.

Women and families facing high-risk pregnancies, difficult diagnoses or pregnancy loss are supported with sensitivity, dignity and compassion by NGH’s Antenatal and Newborn Screening team.

That patient-centred care has now been recognised with a Star Award, celebrating colleagues who go above and beyond to help people feel informed, respected, supported and safe throughout their maternity journey.

The team coordinates complex referrals and guides families through challenging care pathways with patient centred care at the centre of all that they do.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this well-deserved achievement.✨
