Our volunteers make an incredible difference - every single day. ๐Ÿ’™

Across Northampton and Kettering General Hospitals, volunteers are supporting patients, helping colleagues, and bringing kindness when it matters most. Their impact is so powerful, itโ€™s inspired our own colleagues to write poems about them - like this one from Olivia in Respiratory Diagnostics at NGH.

Together we can make a real difference - and our volunteers show us exactly how. As we approach Volunteersโ€™ Week (1โ€“7 June), could this be your moment to get involved?

Weโ€™re currently looking for Response and Ward volunteers across both hospitals.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If youโ€™ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the time
๐Ÿ‘‰ Join us, make a difference, and be part of something special

Kettering General Hospital was honoured to welcome The Most Rev Dame Sarah Mullally, Archbishop of Canterbury, during her first pastoral visit to a diocese since becoming Archbishop earlier this year.

During her visit, Archbishop Sarah met members of our Chaplaincy Team and volunteers, as well as clinical and nursing colleagues, to learn more about the support provided to patients, families and staff across our hospital.

With her own background in nursing and NHS leadership, including serving as Chief Nursing Officer for England, Archbishop Sarah spoke with teams about the importance of compassionate care and partnership working across healthcare services.

The visit also included time with KGH Hospital Radio volunteers and a moment of reflection at the hospitalโ€™s Covid-19 memorial in the Pocket Park, where prayers were shared in remembrance of those lost during the pandemic and in recognition of the dedication of NHS staff.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the visit so special.

We were delighted to welcome campaigner Figen Murray OBE to our hospital this week.

As part of our work to raise awareness and understanding of Martynโ€™s Law (The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025) and its application in NHS settings, we hosted an online event bringing together NHS colleagues and healthcare security professionals.

Figen shared her powerful personal story following the loss of her son, Martyn Hett, in the Manchester Arena attack, and her ongoing campaign to improve public safety.

More than 300 people joined the session from across the NHS and healthcare security teams, helping to build awareness, share learning and support positive action across the sector.

Figenโ€™s visit to Kettering General Hospital also provided an opportunity to showcase how our security team led by Darren Barber (KGH Security Specialist) and SGC Security are already working in line with the principles of Martynโ€™s Law.

KGH is recognised as a leading example of good practice, with a whole-organisation approach to safety, strong partnership working, and clear communication across clinical and security teams.

During her visit, Figen, alongside Satia Rai (International Professional Security Association - IPSA), met colleagues in our Emergency Department and security teams, seeing first-hand how we work together to keep patients, visitors and each other safe. She described KGH as โ€œa centre of excellenceโ€ and highlighted the importance of open communication between teams.

We would also like to thank our colleagues at SGC Security Services, who we worked in partnership with to bring together an excellent panel of speakers, including Paul Macarthur (MD, SGC Security Services), Satia Rai (International Professional Security Association), Michael Kill FRSA FIH (CEO, Night Time Industries Association - NTIA) and Nhamo Paz ((Associate Director of Safeguarding, UHN).

Today we celebrate our incredible Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs).

Our ODP colleagues have an important role in supporting patients before, during and after their operations. From anaesthetics to emergency care, they support our teams and patients in highly pressured and complex environments.

ODPs work closely with clinical colleagues to make sure patients are safe and well cared for at every stage of their operation - from preparing for anaesthetic, to supporting during surgery, to helping recovery afterwards.

ODPs work in three main areas:
๐Ÿ’™ Anaesthetics
๐Ÿ’™ Surgery
๐Ÿ’™ Recovery

Many of our ODPs also work in areas like the Emergency Department and Intensive Care, supporting some of our most seriously unwell patients.

Today is an opportunity to recognise their truly vital contribution. Thank you for the incredible care you provide every day.

Meet some of our patients who have benefitted from robotic-assisted cancer surgeries over the last three years.

Pictured are Peter Stephens, from West Haddon, Patricia Green, from Duston, and Paul Sexton, from Lyndon near Oakham who have all had robotic-assisted bowel cancer surgery โ€“ see our website for more details. https://orlo.uk/t0Lh4

Since 2022 we have delivered more than 1,500 operations across both Northampton and Kettering general hospitals โ€“ the majority of them for cancer.

And on Friday, May 15, we are celebrating our robotic-assisted surgery work at a special clinical study day at Northampton General Hospital.

A big thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and theatre staff involved in robotic-assisted surgery and for the difference they are making to our patients.
