Sickle cell disorder is much more than a blood condition. It can affect everyday life in ways that aren't always visible.

Today, on World Sickle Cell Day, we are helping raise awareness of sickle cell disorder and the impact it has on thousands of people across the UK.

Living with sickle cell disorder can mean managing severe pain, fatigue and serious health complications, yet many people affected by the condition continue to face misunderstanding and inequalities in healthcare.

Being seen, heard and supported starts with understanding the realities of living with sickle cell disorder. By listening to people's experiences, increasing awareness and challenging misconceptions, we can help ensure everyone receives the care, compassion and support they deserve.

We are committed to providing compassionate, equitable care and supporting research that helps improve outcomes for people living with sickle cell disorder and other conditions.

In its first year, Corby CDC (Broadleaf House) has delivered tens of thousands of tests and scans, helping Kettering General Hospital patients be seen quicker and closer to home.

With MRI, CT, ultrasound, blood tests and more available in one place, the centre supports GPs and hospital teams to diagnose a range of conditions earlier, including cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.

The centre is now on track to deliver over 94,000 tests and scans in the next 12 months, improving access and supporting earlier diagnosis for our local communities.

Thank you to the Corby CDC team for all their hard work over the last year.

Itโ€™s National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day. We couldnโ€™t provide the best possible care across our hospitals without the hard work of our Estates and Facilities teams.

Did you know?

๐Ÿฅ— Our catering team prepares a whopping (and tasty) 89600 meals each month โ€“ covering various dietary needs

๐Ÿงน Our housekeeping team clean 187595m2 across our sites โ€“ this is the same as around 27 Premier League football pitches

๐Ÿ”ง Over a month our porters undertake 23,200 jobs across our hospital sites. These include portering tasks; patient moves and routine site jobs

๐Ÿ›  Estates and Facilities colleagues are called out to 1,950 maintenance jobs. These are completed alongside both routine and planned maintenance tasks

๐Ÿ‹ Across UHN we manage over 260.5 tonnes of waste per month โ€“ thatโ€™s the equivalent of two blue whales

There are nearly 50 different roles that make up the careers with the NHS Estates and Facilities department. Learn more about these roles on the NHS Healthcare Careers website (Link in comments).

POST EDIT: We held our celebration of Estates and Facilities at NGH today (thursday). So we've updated the post with photos of our NGH colleagues.

For many people, sickle cell disorder is much more than a blood condition. It can affect everyday life in ways that aren't always visible.

People living with sickle cell disorder can experience severe pain, fatigue and other serious health complications that affect daily life.

Research is helping us better understand conditions that disproportionately affect Black communities and improve healthcare for future generations. That's why we're supporting the Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) BioResource programme, which aims to improve Black health outcomes through research and community partnership.

Interested in taking part in our IBHO research?

For many people, sickle cell disorder is much more than a blood condition. It can affect everyday life in ways that aren't always visible.

People living with sickle cell disorder may experience episodes of severe pain, known as sickle cell crises, which can require urgent medical treatment and hospital care. The condition can also cause extreme tiredness, increase the risk of infections and lead to other serious health complications.

These symptoms can affect education, employment, family life and overall wellbeing, making everyday activities more challenging.

By increasing awareness and understanding of sickle cell disorder, we can help reduce stigma, improve experiences of care and ensure people living with the condition feel supported.

At University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, we are committed to providing compassionate, equitable care and supporting research that helps improve outcomes for people living with sickle cell disorder.
